GOP invites preacher who advocates jailing gays to give House prayer
Friday, May 20, 2011 at 10:13 am
Minnesota House Republicans invited anti-gay preacher Bradlee Dean of You Can Run But You Cannot Hide to give the morning prayer. The prayer was so offensive to many legislators that House leadership brought in the chaplain to redo the prayer.
Dean has made many controversial statements as pastor of You Can Run, including advocating the incarceration of gays and lesbians, that the LGBT community is trying to usher in Sharia law in Minnesota, that gay men molest an average of 117 children “before they get caught,” and that Muslim nations that execute gays are more moral than American Christians. His prayer on Friday touched off a firestorm at the Capitol as the LGBT community was rallying outside the House chambers against a proposed anti-gay marriage amendment.
Dean said during his prayer, “I know this is a nondenominational chamber,” he said listing off a litany of Christian denominations and leaving off any mention of Judaism.
Then he took a dig at President Obama, insinuating that he is not a Christian. “The head of the denomination is Jesus as every president up until 2008 has acknowledged, in Jesus name.”
Rep. Terry Morrow, DFL-St. Peter, rose to speak out against the prayer. At first he was at a loss for words.
“I want to express a deep level of concern about what occurred in this chamber this morning,” he said.
He said the fact that the House restarted the prayer was an indication that something went wrong. “I take that as an acknowledgment that there is legitimate cause for deep concern among the members and the staff and among the people of Minnesota.”
Today hope was crushed by the words of a single speaker,” he said. “Mr. Speaker, I do trust and hope that we understand the gravity and the severity of the prayer that has been given to the people within this chamber and out.”
“I’m shaking right now because I’m mad,” he concluded. “This cannot happen again.”
Already this year, in the Minnesota Senate, Republicans invited a pastor who gave a sectarian prayer that caused concern among that chamber’s non-Christian members.
Here are some examples of Dean’s previous comments:

For those unfamiliar with Mr. Dean, his organization has mis-represented itself on numerous occasions. About five years ago, hte Buffalo (MN) high school principal stopped a presentation of theirs when the deviated from the original plan of anti-drug healthy self message and fired up the preaching.
But if anyone is looking for a nice home in the country, Dean’s residence in Wright County (French Lake Township) is for sale.

@Criss cross
They don’t have to insinuate anything. If you have anti-gay animus then you’re a hater. Period. There is no negotiation. So the question becomes, if you are against me on *this* then where does it end? Don’t think for a second that there aren’t millions of Christians just like this guy out there. And you can put “Christian” in quotes to pretend like they somehow aren’t “real” but the truth is that they are only following the bible. Believer of Christ = Christian. The parts they ignore don’t matter.

How many more “prayers” do we need to hear out of the mouths of A-holes before we wise up and stop making prayer a part of government proceedings? As far as I can tell, nobody in the legislature does anything particularly prayerful after the prayer has ended. It’s back to sniping, partisanship, and personal attacks. And Jesus would probably appreciate it if his loudest supporters weren’t so willfully ignorant and offensive.

Tony… just to be clear… are you saying that all Christians are to be neutralized, and the Bible is to be neutralized? I know that’s what a lot of folks believe, but usually they try to avoid saying it directly in order to avoid alienating the Moderates. You came closer to doing so than most folks do. So, while you’re at it, could you please just state it unambiguously, so everyone understands what the culture war is actually about? The reality is, the position of Bible-believers doesn’t necessarily involve any hate. We simply subordinate our own opinions to the absolutes of God’s Word. The folks on the other side either have a different positive belief system which they believe comes from Divine revelation, or more commonly they just oppose the Bible because they oppose ALL absolutes and refuse to let anyone tell them what to do.

Doesn’t your bible have something in it about not judging people, casting the first stone, and to love thy neighbor? There are so many interpretations of your book that you biblical experts can’t even agree on your book’s meaning. You twist it into your biased interpretations. Truly, only your maker knows its meaning. Remember that you will be judged by your maker.

In a twisted way this IS part of their economic agenda. Religious fundamentalists believe that the current economic recession is the result of God punishing America, and therefore Minnesota, for tolerating GLBT rights (to the meager extent this has occurred), reproductive rights (abortions), teaching evolution rather than creationism, etc. Their goal is to appease God through the oppression of their fellow citizens with an imposition of their religion on all. They are, in fact, the American Taliban.

I hope the people of Minnesota roundly reject this garbage. I have a lot of gay friends and trust me, they didn’t choose to be gay. They just ARE. Some say that their lives would’ve been a heck of lot easier if they were straight.
If it is not a choice, then treat them as equals! If you hear someone giving gays a rough time, just ask them: “When did you choose to be heterosexual??”
It is something to think about.

The GOP campaigned on Jobs, Jobs & More Jobs but all they’ve done since is attack abortion rights & access, Planned Parenthood, women’s rights, Medicare, Social Security, art, public infrastructure (FLA train), attack immigrants/Muslims/homosexuals, social programs that assist minorities/poor/disabled/seniors and launched a full-fledged attack on union rights. What freaks me out beyond repair is the fact that Michelle Bachmann, Tom Emmer and a busload of other Republican legislators from Minnesota are friends with him and routinely go to his “church”. Corporations like Target and Best Buy have backed Tom Emmer with decent money, so chain of connections here is just plain scary. Thousands years ago French monks risk their life to built those hugs Gothic’s cathedrals to honor God, risk and sacrifice their life, are those guys brave and real believers to put their life in the border that way?
Stop talking, Show how deep believe in God and imitate the way Jesus lived, show examples of how can sacrifice their life to honor God and stop helping gay people to live wearing clothes of recognized designers, rich cars producers, etc. business and products where gay people don’t participate at all.
