GOP’s Zellers on Bradlee Dean: ‘That type of person will never ever be allowed on this House floor again’

Republican House Speaker Kurt Zellers told members of the Minnesota House that he would never allow Bradlee Dean or anyone like him to give a prayer before the chamber again so long as he is speaker. Dean’s prayer insinuated that President Obama was not a Christian and his past statements about incarcerating gays and lesbians sparked a firestorm of criticism on both sides of the aisle.

“Earlier today there was a prayer given by a man I personally denounce. The decorum and dignity of this body is my responsibility. I did not live up to that responsibility today. For that, I apologize. This is the people’s House. Each member deserves the dignity and respect of all of us,” he said. “Members I can only ask for your forgiveness. That type of person will never ever be allowed on this House floor again as long as I have the honor of serving as speaker.”

Here’s video of Dean’s invocation:

So Zellers personally denounces Bradlee Dean.

Uh-huh. With what specifically does Zellers take issue? What doesn’t he like?

Or could it be that suddenly there was a political problem with what took place, and now Zellers is trying to cover his ass?

I call bullshit.

You can’t unring the bell Speaker Zeller. You approved Bradlee Dean, how could you not know his radical theology? Now, return true “dignity and decorum” to the House by curbing the religious right’s agenda.

Praise Jebus, God hates informed decisions, Amen.

He bleets and rebleets the widely fictitious and discredited Scott Lively and Paul Cameron garbage with the hate groups who advocate and fund the Kill The Gays Bill in Uganda and beyond. Christia Law. No better than Sharia. Same same!

Speaker Zellers, you can totally make it up to me by dropping this anti-gay marriage amendment bullshit. All would be completely forgiven, until next time. And there will be a next time, I’m sure.

so now he disagrees with it? Has he not herd all of the gay bashing going on for weeks in this great state? Now someone shit in HIS bed and he doesn’t like it. O well then, by all means, stand up for what you “believe”.

If this incident does not convince people of the true nature of the modern Republican Party in Minnesota, I do not know what will. Speaker Zellers pretty much had no choice but to offer this statement.

Want to impress me? Have the person who extended then invitation in the first place come forward and apologise. Then maybe the entire House Republican Caucus. Otherwise, it is tacit approval of what Mr. Dean and his supporters (including Rep. Bachmann and former-rep Tom Emmer) stand for.

Shaming the KKKons for being bigots does no good. It only give them more cred with their core constituencies. Bachmann and Emmer were probably applauding.

The Republicans love to “apologize” for things that they do knowing full well they are wrong at the time that they do them. That, Mr. Zellers, is not an apology: it’s a confession.

If Zellers can’t manage this legislature in a way that reflects well on our State, he should step down.

I am appalled by the audacity and disrespect shown by Representative Zellars to Minnesotans and Americans in general. Separation of church and state is a key premiss on which our country was founded. The ability to be free to practice any or no religion is a hard earned right, of all our citizens. Americans are one Nation, indivisible, no matter our personal beliefs and practices. No person, especially in the operations of our government systems should be imposed upon by another’s deity or beliefs. That type of behavior, in my opinion is ANTI-AMERICAN!

Zeller and his zealots should resign their office. How much worse does it need to get before these cruel people are stopped? We have elected psychopaths to manage our state.

The Rev. Dean (Reverend? Really?) is not very eloquent away from his radio microphone; finds it difficult to speak when he has to rein in the hate even a bit. This terrible decision by the Republicans will at least shed some light on their vision of Minnesota’s future and their willingness to do absolutely anything, including pervert Christian principles, in order to get there. I anxiously await comments from Tim and Michelle.

I guess they were on Mars during the governor’s race to not heard about how hateful Dean is and invite him in to lead them in prayer.

“We didn’t know he was that controversial, certainly I didn’t,” Leidiger said. “That was not my intention to bring a controversial figure like that in before the House. This is an honest mistake.”

Leideger is lying.

Zellers: “That type of person will never ever be allowed on this House floor again as long as I have the honor of serving as speaker.”

Does that mean that Zellers is going to stay off the House floor?

Apologize my a$$!!

If there is any doubt in anyone’s mind as to what this marriage amendment is REALLY about, Deans invitation should have made that perfectly clear. It has nothing to do with defining marriage or defending marriage. It’s all about hate. Zellers knew that. His little speech is BS.

How about an amendment to outlaw the Republican party?

@Ambrose- Hah, my thoughts exactly. And, at the risk of repetition, there is no way an active conservative GOP leader could be unaware of DB’s hateful theology.

Speaker Zellers you are a liar!

Er, make that BD as in Bradlee Dean, not DB as in DB Cooper the infamous ransom/hijacker parachute escapist.

I think the knuckleheads who got the bright idea of inviting the guy should be sanctioned and removed from their jobs if not elected. The apology seems rather after the fact but welcome nonetheless. Vet the speakers, people. It will save you a lot of grief later on.

Maybe he should have asked Newt Gingrich to lead the prayer. We know Newt is pro-marriage between a man and woman. Heck, he believes so strongly in this that he`s done this THREE times. And he couldn`t wait to get married to his 2nd and 3rd wives, he cheated on his 1st and 2nd with their successor. Ambitious!

Now, what more could you want?

Well sure. Wasn`t Michele Bachmann in Jupiter lately? (Good thing she stopped there and didn`t continue on to Uranus).

Can someone clear my confusion up? I’m a little slow and listened several time to the prayer and didn’t hear anything about “gays”. Are people angry at who this guy is or what he prayed?

@Bruce-

Let me suggest the following stories on this website;

http://minnesotaindependent.com/81762/gop-invites-preacher-who-advocates-jailing-gays-to-give-house-prayer

http://minnesotaindependent.com/81774/bipartisan-outrage-erupts-over-gops-invite-to-bradlee-dean-to-give-house-prayer

and then add, BD also took a clear swipe at the President during what is supposed to be a non-partisan prayer in violation of house rules. So in short the answer to your question is, both.

Praise Jebus, God hates chickens coming home to roost, Amen.

@ Bruce

The House Leadership invited Bradlee Dean to give a LAME prayer on the House floor on the SAME DAY that the Republikans were legislating AGAINST the rights of Gays.. Even though an A$$hole like Dean didn’t say anything about Gays his mere presence is symbolic of homophobia.. He (Dean) is part of the right wing Corporate Christian front groups and religiously funded Family councils that HATE queers..

If anything Deans ridiculous prayer was Racist.. I mean how could “The Black Guy” in the “White House ” whom has PROVEN that he was born in America actually be a “Christian”..

GOD save us from the Christians!!
