Rep. Cornish’s ‘rude’ emails anger gay marriage supporters

By Andy Birkey
Monday, May 23, 2011 at 9:59 am

A vote by Rep. Tony Cornish to put a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage on the 2012 ballot has brought a flurry of emails into the Good Thunder Republican’s inbox expressing disappointment. The responses he’s been sending back — “Give it a rest!!!!!!!!!” and “try writing a sane letter,” among others — have only served to fan the flames.

A Minnesotan named Stephanie, who sent a form email through the Human Rights Campaign website, got a response from Cornish that she described as “rude.”

Other people who have emailed Cornish have also received responses.

“Cool off & try writing a sane letter,” went one response. “Try writing your own letter without forwarding someone else’s anger and resentment. Get an idea of your own,” Cornish wrote in another email.

Update: A reader shares correspondence with Cornish, which included the explanation for the “give it a rest” line:

From the start, right after my vote, I received e mails calling me a “bigot” and much much worse, describing in detail horrific things that I should do to my own body, and people talking about my “obituary.” It wore on me, so about the 300th letter I got like that, I replied, “Give it a rest!”

It’s just kind of disturbing I guess, when my district asked me overwhelmingly to put this on the ballot, that I should get such letters.

Thanks for writing,

Cornish

Another reader sends this email, received from Cornish Sunday and sent in response to an email generated by the Human Rights Campaign:

Hey, try writing a letter on your own and not copy someone else’s. That way you won’t be trapped into writing ridiculous ranting letters.

Have a great day.

Cornish

Both emails come from Cornish’s official House email address.

He is awfully dismissive of the electorate for an elected official. I suspect he serves a mythical sky fairy rather than his constituents. Another bigot for Jesus.

I got one too.. screenshots if anyone wants them. He said “Eh eh eh” which doesn’t even mean anything. This seems like a kid got a hold of the account and is having fun.. or maybe Cornish likes free publicity?

This is what you get when you elect people based on fear and selfishness. You get legislators who act on their own fear and selfishness. I miss the Republican party, I have no idea who these clowns are.

Get an idea of your own indeed, Mr. Cornish! Copy Florida’s education “reform” even though MN schools outperform those in FL, copy union-busting and anti-worker legislation, hang on to the no-tax pledge whether it’s good for MN or not. Follow, copy, ignore your citizens. Great GOP leadership!

Yeah, he’s the clown in the black leather jacket, black shirt, and yellow “POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS” neck tie chairing the Public Safety Committee. Tony is an intellectual power house and fashion statement all rolled into one. We’re so lucky to have his wise leadership and counsel in the House of Representatives.

I’m looking at the porn star mustache and thinking that Rep. Cornish has more than a passing interest in gay marriage.

I sent an email to Rep. Cornish a couple of hours ago. Here’s his response:

First of all, I am one of a few legislators that don’t take any PAC money or big business money. All I take is small private donations. Check it out on the Campaign Finance Board.

Also, from the start, right after my vote, I received e mails calling me a “bigot” and much much worse, describing in detail horrific things that I should do to my own body, and people talking about my “obituary.” It wore on me, so about the 300th letter I got like that, I replied, “Give it a rest!”

It’s just kind of disturbing I guess, when my district asked me overwhelmingly to put this on the ballot, that I should get such letters.

Thanks for writing,

Cornish

Cornish is an extreme idiot! He keeps sending me, a female registered Democrat, fundraising letters with personal notes on them, asking if “Mike” can help him out.
And he wants to disparage other people’s communications? He can’t even get that right, how on earth would I assume he could craft responsible legislation?

@Jessie,

The receipt of angry e-mails is a normal part of holding public office. But if a legislator is promoting the oppression of a minority they will get even more. Free speech cuts both ways.

I wonder what kind of e-mails Sen. Kibble gets?

Cornish is just being a good guy by creating a stir so the heat gets off Ernie Leidiger for inviting Bradlee Dean. It’s Leidiger’s reward for getting the heat of Gretchen Hoffman. Now, won’t somebody do something stupid and help out Cornish?

I’m sorry if Representative Cornish is having to reap back some of the hatred that he’s sown.

Privately disliking gay marriage is perfectly acceptable. Publicly decrying it is even okay. Vocalizing how homosexual activity and same-sex marriage are against your religious beliefs is not a problem.

It’s the assumption that YOUR opinion should limit the rights of a large body of people who are not harming a single person by demanding that they be treated equally.

Threats to your person? Not acceptable – but even that doesn’t garner much sympathy. Your inability (either due to ignorance or stubbornness) to put yourself in the other guy’s shoes simply shows that you don’t deserve that office.

How would you feel if a large segment of the population voted that people with – let’s say – gray or white hair could not marry, and their marriages were henceforth invalid in the eyes of the government? I bet you’d be just a wee bit miffed, wouldn’t you? Maybe find it a bit ridiculous? Might you not want to lash out, especially if you spent a few years with people publicly telling you that having white hair meant you were an abomination?

So Rep. Cornish, if you’re expecting some sort of sympathy for ‘supporting’ your constituent’s baseless bigotry, then you need to trim up that mustache so that you can see reality once in awhile.

I sent the following e-mail to Representative Cornish via his page on the Minnesota House website:
-
Since you requested that people be original, I thought I would write you an e-mail of my own:
-
Your support of the baseless bigotry of your constituents is, by extension, also bigotry.
-
You can attempt any excuse that you want, but you have not one shred of rational, justifiable evidence to support such a blatant piece of hate legislation.
-
And I say that with absolute surety, Representative Cornish, because I can guarantee that hate groups such as the National Organization ‘for’ Marriage and the Family Research Council have much more intelligent researchers working on it, and yet all they can do is spew the same tired, unevidenced rhetoric, half-truths, and outright lies in regards to gay marriage in an attempt to paint a purely religious argument in such a way as to be acceptable in a secular government.
-
So spare us the cries for sympathy. While it’s abhorrent that people have insinuated that you should commit self-harm because of this, at the same time YOU should understand that when you have large groups of people who wish to legally relegate you to the status of second-class citizens and legislatively mandate your relationship as invalid or harmful, they might be just a BIT upset. The fact that you can’t put yourself in the other person’s shoes for ten seconds seems to indicate that you lack the vision necessary to hold public office.
-
Sincerely,
Josh D

@Carl: Exactly! I wish that the nation at large would feel this way.

Let’s face it, a person has the right to free speech. They have the right to freedom of religion. However, when your opinion or religion espouses hatred and bigotry and discrimination, then as a people WE have the right to retribution – not violent, but through whatever legal channels are available. If that means hitting them in the pocketbook, then so be it.

I’m sick and tired of people whining about how refusing to buy at their store is discrimination against THEM. Want my business? Don’t be a bigot. Plain and simple. It’s why I haven’t eaten at Chick-fil-A since I found out how deep their anti-gay sentiment runs.

To: Rep.Cornish and his constituents who told him to vote for an amendment to the state constitution to take away God and Federal given rights of the pursuit of happiness.
I was confirmed a Lutheran in the 50s in PA. I never read in my studies or was told by my pastor, that Jesus advocated the removal of rights of people because you do not agree with the fact that God chose to make certain people gay and lesbian. Why God chooses to do, create or make is God’s business and not our business. We are placed here by God to learn how not to let the Ego rule our lives. The Seven Principles of the Unitarian Universalist states in easy terms God’s intentions without all the trappings of dogma and misinterpretations of Jesus’ teachings.
The Seven principles of UUs.
* The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
* Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
* Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations and in our communities;
* A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
* The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
* The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
* Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Sir, I extended to you and your constituents the Divine Love of God that you may in your heart know the Love of God and reconsider your action of the past Saturday when you choose to overtly deny the human rights of a particular group of citizens in your good state. I urge you all to find a quite place, contemplate and meditate on what you are doing and how this amendment will only tear our current fragile social society more apart. Is it worth the million of dollars and human resources that will be consumed on both sides to fight an anti-human rights amendment that will only socially tear the state apart? Do you want to be responsible for another California Prop 8 fallout? As stated in the 7th UU principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
Rep. Cornish and the constituents of: Take time to learn how to: “Stand On The Side Of Love”. Your state and this country need you help and this help will start with “Standing On The Side Of Love”.

May The Blessings Be

In a perfect example of their chronic dishonesty, NOM links to this article with post claiming the real story is about all the uncivil emails Cornish claims to be receiving. You see no matter what the facts, THEY are always the victim.

Josh D.
Comment posted May 25, 2011 @ 3:43 pm

JohnnyC: That’s honestly because NOM’s inner core of supporters – including Brian Brown – do not live in reality.

They live in a fragile bubble of faith-based illusion wherein they have a divine mandate to ensure that marriage equality does not come to pass.

They are so removed from reality that it does not matter how much you expose their lies, how often you slap them in the face with the reality of valid, harmless, loving gay families; they will cling to their faith-based justification with the sort of religious zealotry that causes people to bomb abortion clinics or crash planes into buildings.

So they can do nothing BUT act victimized when presented with such realistic evidence – because to do otherwise would shatter something at the core of their faith, and they can’t face that.

Dear Tony,- I will say it AGAIN! – GOOD ON YOU! STAND UP AND BE COUNTED AMONGST THE BRAVE! MARRIAGE is GOD’S DESIGN FOR MANKIND, and man should NEVER interfere with this!
I have lived for many YEARS in Papua-New Guinea, where God’s rules on marriage have been known since TIME IMMEMORIAL! – And in fact, the people will DEFEND that with their LIVES.
THEY probably KNOW why GOD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah…. to prevent the HUMAN RACE from dying OUT! – A good reading and insight into the Bible of the action God took to get LOT and His family OUT of the city which had become TOTALLY “GAY” by enforcing their lifestyle through POLITICS and obviously subsequent LAWS, was an ABOMINATION to GOD, so he wiped out the 2 cities – probably by a neutron-style blast. (my inference).
AND I see that in the USA, that the MINORITY is trying desperate measures to AFFECT THE MAJORITY. That is ONE problem of Democratic Government that irks me…. a FEW can cause the Majority of citizens undue heartache! – That reminds me of Jesus’ words – “thou hast made the Law a like a MILLSTONE around thy necks!” – I offer that He KNEW it was going to get WORSE before it ever got BETTER!
If you want to use my email for your own use, feel free! – I am an ex-veteran, and the antagonists do not scare ME either!

@ Terry Schneider,, God never MADE some men GAY, and others NOT GAY… read the BIBLE where in Leviticus, the parents of effeminate young teens were told how to TEACH their children the RIGHT WAY to HONOR GOD and behave NATURALLY. So, this is what is NEEDED, not resigning yourself to sin! – WE are to FIGHT sin in all it’s forms, and when we are victorious, it makes us stronger! – NOW psychologists have recognized that proper TRAINING will CORRECT the anomaly, and STRAIGHTEN OUT the kinks of SATAN’S misleading lies. Let’s hope that you can repent and be forgiven, and you cease your sin, because it is written that “a (practicing) homosexual can NEVER enter Heaven”
