Dayton vetoes anti–gay marriage amendment in symbolic gesture

Calls bill 'divisive, mean-spirited, un-Minnesotan and un-American'

On Wednesday morning, Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed a proposed amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in the Minnesota Constitution. The veto is only symbolic — the Minnesota governor has no authority over constitutional amendments. In his veto message Dayton called the amendment “divisive and destructive” and urged Minnesotans to vote against it in 2012. Dayton told reporters at a press conference that it was a bit of an anomaly for him to be presented with the amendment bill, but it also gave him an opportunity to comment on it.

“Without question, I am vetoing it; and I urge Minnesotans to reject this divisive, mean-spirited, un-Minnesotan and un-American amendment,” he wrote. “Minnesota is better than this. Minnesotans are better than this. I urge Minnesotans to reject this amendment.”

At a press conference for the veto, Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner-Solon, said, “I add my voice in urging Minnesotans to reject the marriage amendment when it comes before them in 2012.” She called the amendment a “travesty.”

Sen. Scott Dibble, DFL-Minneapolis, said, “[The veto] has no practical effect but has a tremendously positive effect across the state of Minnesota. It shows that he stand with every citizens and every family.”

“I know that we are going to beat this amendment,” he added.

Rep. Karen Clark, DFL-Minneapolis, “I want to thank Gov. Dayton and Lt. Gov. Prettner-Solon for really important leadership. It was heartbreaking to have the bill pass,” said Clark adding her belief that love will win over discrimination. “We are going to love this thing to death.”

She added that it’s going to be a bruising battle. “The other side had already put out documents about igniting a culture war.”

Dayton added, “I’m optimistic that the overwhelming majority of Minnesota will reject this and still be a leader on social progress in this country.”

I add my thanks also.

We’ve said it a million times and I suspect we will say it a billion times more: Thank God you are our governor!

Last night, the Democrats won what should have been a noncompetitive seat in upstate New York. In Washington, in Michigan, in Wisconsin and in even Minnesota, Republicans are taking their overreach well beyond what the people ever asked for into areas very deeply offensive to most Americans. The people will speak, both on this amendment and on them, in 2012, and the people will call for their own veto too!

The Onion’s take on people who created this bill comes to mind:

If God Had Wanted Me To Be Accepting Of Gays, He Would Have Given Me The Warmth and Compassion To Do So.

Bill supporters: Remember as you read this, IT’S SATIRE, and they’re not laughing with you.

Hey Governor Dayton. Why don’t you sign something that will make a difference like the budget and the voter id bill.

So disgusted american, is it okay for the Human Rights Campaign to be involved in what’s going on in our state? You have to say no or you are a hypocrite. They are bragging about sending 100,000 emails to our legislators. I want THEM to mind their own business.

Hey Betty Bigot, this WILL make a difference to the lives of thousands of gay families and their children – in a NEGATIVE way.

Why didn’t the GOP legislature spend their time on the budget and jobs instead of this?

I’d like to see voters reject Dayton at the polls.

I’d like to see voters reject betty ruble and the rest of her religious flintstone flock! Obviously a shill for fat ass Ghallager and her hate spewing crew, our little betty rubble is more than likely on the NOM dole. Think twice Minnesota before voting this measure into law. The eyes of history are upon you all now.

I think Betty has a bug up her butt. It’s too bad some people make a choice to remain ignorant. Really sad.

Dear Betty,

The differences between the Human Rights Campaign and the MN Family Council and NOM are the following:

1) MFC and NOM lie and distort research when it suits their needs. Good luck finding that with HRC.
2) MFC and NOM hope to further enshrine into law, policy and the moral understructure of our society, hatred, disenfranchisement and dehumanization of a category of people. The HRC does not.

Any questions?

@Betty Rubble- Sorry but the demand for human rights is already in Minnesota. If the truth contradicts your beliefs change your beliefs don’t ignore the truth.

The GOP’s strategy is to use economic reform as a trojan horse to sneak religious extremism into the public arena. This has become so obvious in the last weeks as to embarrass even moderate Republicans. Mark Dayton was right to call them on this. And shame on them for adopting such a dishonest approach to public policy development.

Praise Jebus, God hates a transparency, Amen.

Way to go Gov. Dayton! You’ve done a great service to your state by saying no to the hate and very un-religious Right. I saw footage of the two legislators, Rep and Dem, who spoke out against this amendment, very powerful and I applaud them for doing so so eloquently. Love should not be restricted but celebrated and that’s what gay marriage provides for those involved, straight and gay. I have a little more faith in the struggle for gay marriage rights because of the actions of the leaders and citizens of Minnisota. I have faith this amendment will be defeated when put to a vote in your state in 2012, you’ve taken a great step already!

@Disgusted American – “Hey Betty….1st off HOW dare you USE a name of a BELOVED Cartoon character for you filthy right wing Lies and distortions…”

I agree about the beloved cartoon character – Betty was way hotter than Wilma IMO -

I think what she’s doing is illustrating the currency and validity of her opinions.

She’s a cave person.
