Pawlenty gets ‘glitter-bombed’ in San Francisco
Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 3:36 pm
Republican presidential hopeful and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty was showered in glitter by two protesters outside an event in San Francisco today.
ABC News reported the protesters dumped the pink glitter and some confetti on Pawlenty while he was signing copies of his book outside a conference organized by a coalition of health insurance companies.
“Tim Pawlenty, where is your courage to stand?” the protesters said, according to Politico’s Kate Nocera. “Stand for reproductive rights! Stand for gay rights!”
Last month, protesters in Minneapolis threw glitter at former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich while he was in town raising funds for the Minnesota Family Council. Protester Nick Espinosa shouted, “Feel the rainbow, Newt,” as he poured glitter on the former Speaker of the House. “Stop the hate. Stop anti-gay politics. It’s dividing our country and it’s not fixing our economy,” Espinosa said.
This time, however, Espinosa tweeted that he was not part of the glittering, but hailed the action, calling it “the start of a movement from Minneapolis to San Francisco.”

I’m a big fan of political theater, but this sort of thing is childish.
I hate it when I have to say that about people I agree with.

Glitter bombing is a beautiful, non-violent expression of dissatisfaction with the status quo. But those are armed men around the candidates and they may not always interpret this as the benign event it is. They should be very careful.
