Keith Ellison calls Lynne Torgerson’s campaign one of ‘hate, division, and fear’
Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 7:53 am
Rep. Keith Ellison sent a fundraising pitch to supporters on Monday calling out his newly announced challenger Lynne Torgerson for her comments calling him a “radical Muslim fundamentalist.” Torgerson, who announced her campaign at Tea Party Nation on Thursday, garnered only 3 percent against Ellison’s 69 percent in the last election.
“It’s clear that Torgerson intends to run a campaign based on hate, division, and fear,” Ellison said. “Just like in 2010, we’re not going to let our opponent’s divisive rhetoric set the tone of this campaign. Instead, we’re going to keep pushing for good jobs, affordable health care, and equality for all people.”
Ellison added, “Help defeat extremism by investing in our campaign. Unlike our opponent, we’ll continue organizing voters around our belief in liberty and justice for ALL.”
Torgerson has launched a campaign website and blog on which she describes herself as a “public speaker, lawyer, litigator, Constitutional expert, Congressional candidate, opinion writer, teacher and pro-Israel Christian who recently won Attorney of the Year. She wishes to educate, expose and stop the political ideological part of Islam and protect American freedoms of speech and religion.”
In 2009 she told the Minnesota Independent that she believes Muslims “have teachings that are essentially criminal, and her campaign site at the time, citing the terrorist attacks of 9/11, stated that “Islam [is] conducting an act of war against my country.”
Though Torgerson ran as an independent in 2010, she’s included many photos of herself with Republican elected officials and activists on her campaign’s Facebook page, including Tom Emmer, Sen. David Hann, Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch and Sen. Julianne Ortmann.

Keith Ellison has been a voice of reason amidst a chorus of Christian zealots and Confederate dunces. Our nation needs him more than ever. Our state should be proud of him. I am.
3%? How much is a bigotry bump?

I am a constituent of the 5th district and I think Keith is extremely radical….dude. Like totally cowabunga man.
All joking aside, Keith is an excellent man. The 5th district is 71% caucasian and I am sure it has a higher percentage of christians but yet we overwhelmingly support a black muslim as our representative. Hmmmm, this ai’nt no 6th district yo! This is Keith’s home for as long as he continues to serve as he has so far.
Lynne, bring the hate. It will in no way help you.

I’m proud to have Keith Ellison as my representative and will vote for him any time, any where. Torgerson is a hateful human being; she and those like her are the biggest danger this country faces. Go Keith!

Ms. Torgerson,
It’s infrequent in life when we’re able to make a reliable judgment about someone based just on a single statement. People are often complex and are comprised of many shades and nuances.
But sometimes it appears we can indeed make a reliable and accurate judgment about someone based on a single comment. To wit:
You called Ellison a “radical Muslim fundamentalist.”
There are only two basic conclusions we can draw from this given that Ellison simply isn’t a “radical Muslim fundamentalist.”
a) You are lying. You are intentionally trying to whip up fear, bigotry and hatred of the Other in order to advance your political career. If this is your shtick, then do us all a favor and go back to your day job. You are a stain on our community.
b) You are incapable of making elementary distinctions. Ellison identifies as a Muslim, yes. But there should never be any doubt that Muslims come in many stripes, as do Christians and Buddhists and atheists and bowlers and cat owners. It takes an almost deliberate stupidity to believe that because some Muslims are retrograde in their views, therefore ALL Muslims are. So, in essence, a main plank of your campaign consists of attempting to foist the ‘hasty generalization’ fallacy onto us.
So, either you are lying or you’re level of rational thought is rather low. Either way you are not qualified for significant public office.

Other Democrats could learn a lesson from Mr. Ellison and I’m waiting for them to do so. Mr. Ellison is calling Torgerson out for who she really is and what she really stands for. He minces no words and I completely respect him for doing that. I wish other Dems (both locally and nationally) would do the same when it comes to the GOP Taliban and what they’re trying to do to this country.

Hey I’m stuck with a party liner, I envy those who have the firebrand of progressive politics in Ellison. Take care of him and keep him in office. He’s one of the finest in the land.

How much of a Islamic fundamentalist can be if he’s pro-gay rights? Oh sorry, I was trying to use logic on illogical people.

It is unfortunate that Congressman Sabo’s legislation to limit the federal tax deductibility of the highest paid executives of any business entity to 25 times that of the lowest paid worker didn’t pass despite repeated submissions throughout his long, distinquished career. This bill may not have reigned in the obscene compensation packages, but would have gone a long ways towards raising the overall pay levels of the workers.
I miss that man.

he did deserve the academy award for those tears he produced during the Muslim hearings- that was an amazing performance.

Actually make it the Nobel Peace Prize- that has not meaning any longer as well- Thank you Mr Nobama.

@NICKOS,
I presume you would give the Miss Universe Prize to John Boehner.
FWIW: Keith’s tears were a sincere expression of grief over the way some Americans are scapegoating all members of a religion, himself included, for the acts of a few. If you are a patriotic Christian would you mind being grouped with Timothy McVeigh? If you are just a simple redneck may we assume you are a KKK member? If you go to church then clearly you must sympathize with and support the Westboro Baptist Church’s activities. Good luck with your Nobel.
Praise Jebus, God hates rewarding the good, Amen.

Lynne is not the only candidate running against Keith and just to make a couple things clear, she is not endorsed by the Tea Party or the Republicans. She can say all she wants and she may have announced she was running but she doesn’t have any endorsements. Those have to be earned.
Will Keith keep his seat? That is to be determined. There are a lot of people that are upset with his actions and non-actions. There are some very worthy candidates in the background, just waiting their time.

Keith Ellison is a very reasonable person. I have kept an eye on him for some time, and I have to say that I really appreciate him. With all this hyper political madness everywhere, I am seeing someone stand up against it very well. It is like coming home to reason and common sense, when the rest of the world seems so extreme.
We need to protect that type of person who represents not only a district in Minnesota, but our nation. He really does represent what we need more of of everywhere.
