The Minnesota Independent’s Sam Lane discussed the budget impasse and government shutdown with nationally syndicated radio host Thom Hartmann on Friday. Lane discussed recent stories, including last night’s shutdown and the revelation that Republicans sought a bargain with Gov. Mark Dayton that would’ve put controversial social issues like a ban on funding for some forms of stem cell research and abortion limits back on the table.

Good Job Sam Lane !! Thom Hartmann has a very powerful megaphone and he is a voice of Truth in our messed up political atmosphere.. Thom was right in his assessment of Minnesota being a “Microcosm” of America.. Mark Dayton needs to stand firm on his ground and prove to America (and Obama) that the Republikan Fascisto HATES the average worker.. Go Unions, Go Mark D and Good job Sammy L…

Wow…Mr. Lane is very misinformed. What respectable political reporter stumbles over a basic question about the Minnesota political system. He could not answer the question “does Minnesota have a unicameral or bicameral system.” His answer, “I THINK we have a bicameral.” I think, really? And you are the best person we have for an independent voice about Minnesota politics?
His reporting is also very subjective and judgmental. He starts his answers with “What I have heard is….” An objective (Independent) voice will research the material and not take what they heard from someone else….completely unprofessional.
He goes on to talk about the “deficit” which is very clear he has not idea about how it all works. Gov. Pawlenty signed a balanced budget presented from the democrats. Remember Minnesota has a constitutional obligation to have a balanced budget. The “deficit” came from the $39 billion budget proposal from the democrats, with an anticipated $34 billion in revenue. The current legislature put a balanced $34 billion budget on the Governors desk, he chose to veto it. He also chose to veto the “lights-on” bill which would have prevent all us MAPE employees from being unemployed over the July 4 weekend.
I think if Thom Hartman wants to get a real voice from Minnesota, he should not talk to Mr. Lane again. He claims to be from an “Independent” source…right..try again!

D-lite, it sounds as though you only want to remember what happened on your terms. You are messing up with your facts buddy. I am not a democrat, and I pay attention. You sound like you are spreading misinformation. I am tired of these extremism comments about the MN budget problem, and your comments are part of the problem.

The $39-million budget came from T-Paws budget director- a well respected guy retained in the job by Dayton. I know scary bogeyman stories are preferred by republicans as part of their ongoing narrative-(democrats are evil marxist America-destroying atheists with cooties, Republicans are pure, sweet holy Angels of Goodness) But some of us need to live in the real world.
