Amy Klobuchar pressed to sponsor Defense of Marriage Act repeal
Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 9:45 am
On Tuesday, two groups called on Sen. Amy Klobuchar to sign on as a cosponsor of a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) noting that she is the only Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee who has not taken that step. Klobuchar has indicated her support for the bill in the past, after some pressure, but OutFront Minnesota, the state’s largest LGBT advocacy group, and Freedom to Marry, a national group working toward marriage equality, urged her to sign her name to the bill.
“[O]ur US Senator Amy Klobuchar is the only Democrat on the committee who has not signed on as a co-sponsor. The majority of Minnesotans support the freedom to marry. And now it’s time for Senator Klobuchar to take our voices to Washington and call for an end to marriage discrimination,” OutFront Minnesota wrote in a message to members on Tuesday. “She needs to hear from you now. Will you urge Senator Klobuchar to co-sponsor this crucial legislation?”
Minnesota’s Sen. Al Franken was an early sponsor of the bill, the Respect for Marriage Act, which will be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday morning. Backed by President Barack Obama, it would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, passed by Congress in 1996 and signed into law by President Bill Clinton.
The House version of the bill is sponsored by Reps. Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum.
Klobuchar faced pressure in March to state whether or not she would vote for the bill. Her office indicated she would after earlier stating she would not take a position on the bill.

For my own edification, how is it materially different to cosponsor a bill vs merely endorsing it? I’m assuming her hesitation has something to do with her official record and getting re-elected.

call her 202-224-3244 and ask her to sign…take a stand for this…you are not going to lose and right wing support!

Or email her. I just did. She needs to hear our voices on this. Inaction is inexcusable.

I have to say, I’m not wowed by her response to my email:
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on DOMA. This is an important and personal issue and I appreciate having the benefit of your comments. I support repealing DOMA.
If and when legislation related to this topic comes to the Senate floor, I will keep your thoughts in mind.
Thank you for taking the time to contact me.
Sincerely,
Amy Klobuchar
United States Senator

Klobuchar duped many of us in getting out votes, support and money. She framed herself as a progressive candidate and has been anything but. She has to be pressured repeatedly to do the right thing. It’s time to dump Klobuchar.

Rusty, I won’t harp on how ridiculous it is to suggest dumping a sitting Senator of the Party of your (presumed) choice, when she has the highest approval rating in the entire US Senate. The stupidity of that suggestion is self-evident.
What I will point out is that sandbagging Senator Klobuchar will drag down all the down-ticket DFL candidates in close races, who badly need her coattails. If you have a clue how politics works, and unless you’re a fan of the Republican majorities in both Minnesota Houses, you’ll bite your lip and support the DFL’s meal ticket, Senator Klobuchar.

Let’s put the approval rating of this sitting Congress into context. She and Scott Brown were neck and neck. I respectfully disagree. Referring to the “stupidity” of my suggestion is a huge part of what’s ailing our political discourse. I believe that being politically expedient is never good enough. I’ve nothing against R’s, I’s or D’s. I’m a fan of politicians, executives, and citizens doing the right thing. The honest thing. The fair thing. Personally, I was disappointed with the D’s didn’t use their political capital while in the majority and failed miserably on a host of issues. Actions have consequences.

Rusty, “actions have consequences”? What’s that supposed to mean? Are you capable of non-cliché-speak? Klobuchar will drag the DFL back into the majority in both MN Houses, if the angry left doesn’t abandon winning altogether. If you truly need to vent your spleen, why not beat up on Amy Koch and Kurt Zellers, people who have done you and your state more damage in 6 months than Klobuchar ever has or will?
The “stupidity” comment stands. Your comments do nothing to change that. “I believe that being politically expedient is never good enough.” reflects a particular ignorance of how progress is achieved. You may not be capable today of understanding how counterproductive your attitude is, but you’ll grow older and wiser.

Keep up the pressure on Senator Klobuchar to be more vocal on issues of equality and ask her to lead on the issue. I support that. However, to claim that Amy doesn’t deserve the support of the LGBT community is complete hogwash.
She has supported all the legislation put forward on issues of equality and is publicly opposed to DOMA and the Marriage Discrimination Amendment in Minnesota. I have personal confirmation on all these issues.
One of our [LGBT] biggest strengths is the fact that Klobuchar has close relationships with other Senators who sit on the fence when it comes to issues of equality. While I wish that Minnesota had two Senators who are as publicly vocal as Senator Franken, we need to keep in mind the benefits of having a staunch, influential ally behind the scenes in Washington. In reality most of the policy changes come from the work done behind the scenes.

She has supported LGBT legislation at the 11th hour – only after valuable time, money and resources have been spent to lobby and compel her to do the right thing. Her platform and website list no LGBT issues or concern – it light of a handful of national and topical issues. She is against marriage equality. She, her husband and her daughter enjoy all the benefits, responsibilities and status of marriage and family yet denies Gay Americans the same. Instead, she’s on record as supporting civil unions. That’s certainly not what the community is asking for. If fact, we’ve told her it’s less than equal, 2nd class, and insulting. We can do a lot better than Klobuchar.

Marriage is between a man & a woman for thousands of years. How can 2 penises generate babies?
