Pawlenty: Same-sex marriage ‘defies common sense’
Monday, July 25, 2011 at 12:00 pm
In a CNN interview Sunday, Republican presidential candidate and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty reasserted his opposition to same-sex marriage.
“Marriage between a man and a woman is something that should remained elevated socially, culturally, practically, legally morally in our society,” Pawlenty told interviewer Candy Crowley.
Pawlenty shrugged off repeated questions from Crowley about whether gay marriage in states where it’s legal, like Iowa, have harmed the states.
“When society devalues traditional marriage by saying all other domestic relationships are the same as traditional marriage, you then dilute and devalue traditional marriage,” Pawlenty said.
Pawlenty pointed to the passage of constitutional gay marriage bans in 29 states as evidence that the public agrees with his stance on the issue.
“Obviously, a man and a woman together are a traditional family, that’s how children are raised and born traditionally,” Pawlenty said, while acknowledging that single parents can also be good parents.
“To say that [gay marriage] is is somehow the equal of all possible domestic relationships defies common sense,” Pawlenty added.

Slapshot Tim on common cents, $5.2 billion worth, as in shortfall. And now he shares his philosophy or would it be sophistry of common sense on marriage, yet another shortfall.

Wow,
No matter how it falls out of somebodies mouth it still sounds like bigotry.
Comment posted July 25, 2011 @ 12:47 pm
The Genius of America is that freedom is supposed to reign over the idea of conformity. Tim doesn’t get it? That’s neither new or relevant. Lots of people have lives I simply don’t understand, that doesn’t justify government intervention.

Well first of all, congrats to Pawlenty for going through that interview and a HUGE congrats for Candy asking those very very important questions.
Did anyone notice that Pawlenty could NOT answer the basic question as to how same sex marriages HURT anyone or Iowa or society? He couldn’t anwser the question. He can’t answer the quesiton because he or the GOP has ZERO PROOF.
OK so his way of side stepping was to say that the economy and jobs are the big issue right now… OK GREAT… so then the question is… “How does gay marriage hurt the economy or take jobs away?” OH WAIT… he can’t answer that either because in reality it actually weddings … all weddings … HELP THE ECONOMY AND CREATE JOBS!!!
Also… I heard the word “Tradition” or “Traditional” being used a lot. What about having a leader with “Progressive” views and beliefs that help benefit a diverse society?
I would have asked … “So Timmy, do you believe the breeders should have civil rights that marriage brings but the peaceful gays who also pay taxes, shouldn’t have those civil rights? (Timmy gives totally perplexed look of confusion) Is it then fair that the gays who pay taxes for the breeders children going to school but don’t get the same basic civil rights?”
WOW… that might be WAAAAAAAAAAAY too much logic for Tpaw to handle.

Keep in mind: Had the amendments been worded “Shall same-sex marriage be banned?” it’s unlikely they would have passed.
Much of our work between now and Nov 2012 will be to connect “ban on same-sex marriage” with the proposed definition/restriction of marriage as only between a man and a woman.

No Tim what “defies common sense” is that you are still around. That you actually think you may be President some day. That “defies common sense”.

That Pawlenty look of perplexity…
It’s as though every time before he makes a public appearance a magical baboon appears to him, yanking his hair.
“Ouch!”
“Yes, it’s me the traditional values baboon/campaign advisor.”
“Jesus? I was supposed to meet Jesus here. Are…”
“–No, I’m a baboon and I have some campaign advice for you. Do you have any fruit by the way?”
“Um, I’m not sure…oh…there’s a banana.”
“Thanks. I’ll make this quick. You don’t have much time. Bachmann is about to prove she hates more people for Jesus than you do. You have to do something about it if you want to save your campaign.”
“Tell me–anything, I’ll do it. ANYTHING.”
“Demonize the gays and lesbians. You already know that True Christians (TM)–not the liberal freethinking antichrist Christians–are full of the most bitter, resentful and angry prejudi…I mean, love for them.”
“Yes, bitter…resentful…love…I follow. Go on.”
“You don’t have any frickin’ apples in here do you!?”
“Um, no I don’t think we do.”
“Whatever. So, you’ve gotta exploit this. You gotta use other people as a stepping stone. Distract the public. Hate–I mean, traditional values hatred for sin–that works! Tried and true! Hate the sin! Hate, hate, hate for Jesus!”
“Yes! I’m seeing it now!”
“Good! Now, go out there and do that interview. Put those homos under your heel!”
“Ow! Don’t pull my hair like that!”
“Godspeed, friend. True Christians(TM) are counting on you.”

T-Paw mispoke slightly. What he meant to say was “Bashing minorities unpopular with your base to enhance your profile with them defies common decency”.

Oh I doubt Timmy gives two shits about gay people. This is all politics, because that’s all this man is — a political weasel. He’s getting hammered by Crazy Shelly in Iowa, but he became a weasel long ago. Still, with this bitchy rhetoric, he’s trying to appear more crazy, because that’s what gets votes in the GOP/Teabaggers. You have to be crazier than the craziest motherfucker in the room. Right now Timmy isn’t crazy enough.

@ Eric
You just made my day. ROLF … “hating more people for Jesus” is brilliant, sad, but brilliiant because thats exactly what the wing-nuts do.
Timmy or MB simply no not stand for the things that Modern Day American’s need. TP and MB stand for suppression and oppression through control and conformity through their personal manipulated religious ideals. It’s an almost impossible sell to the majority of the American public. Now, more than ever, through the internet, people are better informed and connected.
Well, it’s actually a fantastic setup for Obama to have another landslide election win. It also brings to light fraud and bigotry from people such as the Bachmanns.

he’s obviously not going to become president, but would it be better for him to win the nomination over people like palin or bachmann? obviously we hope none of them wins, but i’m afraid what could happen to this country if someone like bachmann became president

The man whose common sense leads him to think adding debt is better than pay as you go for this state. Common sense tells me that if two consenting adults think marriage is right for them, who else matters? Common sense also tells me that republicans who don’t believe in BIG government should keep government out of other people’s bedrooms and private lives. He is such an empty suit – and I hate to say it but at least Bachman is not a hypocrite.

“you then dilute and devalue traditional marriage”. Yeah, as if heterosexuals were incapable of doing that themselves. Let’s talk adultery, let’s talk divorce. Yep, “traditional” marriage is looking mighty diluted and devalued all by itself without any help from the LGBT community. Consider that plank in your own eye before you point out the sawdust in another’s.

What defies common sense is “borrowing” millions from Minnesota’s public school system without any plans or revenue sources to pay it back. Care to address that one, TPaw? Because I’m pretty sure Minnesotans care a lot more about that line of thought than whatever your opinion is on gay marriage.

The ugly face of Heterosexual Privilege. When Pawlenty promotes the marriage of Gay American’s as unequal, lower than, less deserving of… he promotes the continued discrimination and intolerance of these citizens. These hostilities often lead to violence.

“To say that [gay marriage] is is somehow the equal of all possible domestic relationships defies common sense,” Pawlenty added.”
There’s that buzz term “common sense” which subtly suggests “gained by experience”…. except that by this simple statement he PROVES his experience in the world has been to limited, narrow, insular blindered to notice the many same sex relationships that have raised strong healthy children…. (not to mention that a prejudice against the quality of same-sex relationships in and of themselves is just … common … bigotry.)
…And other comments, here posted, show how Pawlenty uses this faulty concept over and over.
It’s part of his–as one poster called it on another site–”amiable prick” persona.

Defying common sense- wasn’t that the title of T-Paw’s autobiography?
Comment posted July 26, 2011 @ 2:57 pm
He still couldn’t answer the question… it was pretty direct, asked several times.
Now New York is projecting a boost in it’s economy this year that go well into the millions from the legalization of gay marriage. That is right, the states that are legalizing gay marriage are boosting their economys into the MILLIONS.
C’mon people. The ideals and outdated ‘ traditions ‘ that the GOP pukes out is not the progressive leadership that this diverse modern day American country needs.

I didn’t hear any hate or animosity here. I heard one man’s opinion. It sounds like all the hate is coming from these postings. I’m wondering, who’s the bigot?

Shirley, he has nothing to stand on,
I don’t hate you, I accept your opinion I do not support it at all though.
Comment posted July 26, 2011 @ 4:17 pm
Shirley,
Because bigotry is interchangeable.
Just replace the SSM with Interracial mar. Just replace SSM with women’s right to vote or own property.
I have to agree with Mike and it was very well said. Religion had its time and taught the world to read and write for over 1000 years.
Now it is time we drop our superstition and stand on our own, to face the reality of a universe much more diverse than any superstitious book.
Comment posted July 26, 2011 @ 4:52 pm
@Paul, I believe Shirley has the right to stand on any book, and believe in whatever she believes, in, its the indoctrination, and push of that religion, and choice of lifestyle that I have a problem with being pushed on me and anyone else.
This is a civil rights issue as you point out Paul. Not a religious one, accept that she has a superstitious choice of lifestyle, just don’t support it for yourself.
Shirely
exactly how does SSM hurt your straight life?, marriage? What are your standings that its not the same as opposite marriage? I can tell you that my marriage of almost 25 years now, to the same man, which whom I have very young children with, is not at all damaged by someone who is married to someone that is the same sex as they are. If anything my marriage doesn’t mean as much until all people have the same right and are equal. For its the equality that is the moral issue here.
Comment posted July 26, 2011 @ 11:54 pm
Since Shirley asked, Mr. Pawlenty is clearly the bigot for clinging to the notion of “traditional marriage” while denying the increasingly well-documented reality of countless deep, committed relationships realized by same-gender couples along with successfully raising their children into responsible adults with the qualities of both their relationships and child-rearing undistinquished from – and often superior to – that of opposite-gender couples and their children. Common sense would dictate that this is what really matters – much more so than what genitals the couple has and what they do with them.
Shirley would be well-advised not to trivialize this reality by dismissing our protestations at the likes of Mr. Pawlenty and her who pretend we don’t exist, who pretend our relationships are a joke, who pretend our children are less just because of who their parents are.
Finally, Mr. Pawlenty’s bigotry is all the more detestable since it is not truly from the heart, but more from his self-serving political ambitions. I would not put it past him to curry favor from well-heeled corporations eager to do away with laws mandating equal pay for equal work regardless of gender, for example. And besides, I don’t care what he thinks about anything given that he’s pretty much jumped the shark since before he was born in South St. Paul all these years ago. Meh.

I hope he signs it. I hope all the politicians sign it. Its the way things should be. The Gay Agenda has turned into Terrorist group.

Biff, with people like Norway killer, hate crimes this week on lesbians in our own country, Fathers shooting their their TODDLERS cause they think they are gay,
Who is the terrorist?
your bigotry is a sin.
I am NOT gay by the way so where is my agenda?
The only agenda is that of the religious right hating and indoctrination and hate.
Comment posted August 5, 2011 @ 2:54 pm
GLAAD is a terrorist organization. You Gays realize if you use the word Bigot too much you may become one. Just because people dont want to see gay marriage doesnt mean they are bigots. I dont want to legalize Marijuana even though it might help some people. Does that mean Im a bigot? I dont want prisoners to have access to porn in Prisons. Am I a bigot. Nope. It just means I have an opinion and if you dont like it….too bad. If the Gays would put all this stuff to a vote instead of trying to force it down out throats through judicial process it might work better. But NOOOO everybody is a bigot.
Comment posted August 5, 2011 @ 3:04 pm
by the way the word Bigot means this A bigot is a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from their own or intolerant of people of different political views, ethnicity, race, class, religion, sexuality or gender. So you gays are bigots too, since you are not tolerant of others political views. So you are a Homo Bigot.
Comment posted August 6, 2011 @ 9:25 am
To not allow others, to force your opinion on others Biff, is why you are a bigot. I am fine with you being the way you are, you are allowed not to support gay marriage FOR YOU. Not for all the gay people in the world. Preach that you think its wrong to be gay, scream from the roof tops that its wrong, and that you think that all gay marriages are a farce. WHO CARES. But when you FORCE that opinion which is rooted in religion, that’s when are you a bigot.
IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO BE GAY. So you must accept gay people. ITS A CIVIL RIGHT TO GET MARRIED. So you are denying people the same right as you. Gay families are here, they raise kids, so you are literally taking away the same rights you have from those kids.
yes Biff you are a bigot, you are the one with an agenda and you are indoctrinating people.
I am not Gay. So you can keep saying you gay people. I am a stay at home mom married for 20 plus years.
My husband is not gay, he feels the same way as I do. I have more friends that are straight than gay, they feel the same way I do.

Tim Pawlenty’s views on “common sense” are about as meaningful as Moammar Khaddafi’s vews on representative democracy. He certainly displayed very little of it as governor.

Hey Biff, what’s your problem? How does anyone else’s marriage affect YOU?
Comment posted August 10, 2011 @ 9:22 am
Biff, Does it effect you when more than 50 percent of “Christian marriages” end in divorce?
Does it effect you when you can leave your dieing wife with cancer in the hospital for your mistress? or do you praise the ground that fellow walks on as a leader?
Does it effect you that “Christians” can make a choice over the internet and marry them on the internet? without ever meeting?
Does it effect you that you can get married in ten mins after meeting someone in Las Vegas and then divorce them less than 24 hour’s later?
Does it effect you that that the prisons are full of “Christian marriages”? That a mass murderer can get married on death row and consummate that marriage?
non of those things are endangering the constitution of marriage, but two dedicated, partners, who want to spend their lives together perhaps raising a child in that love is somehow making your marriage a bad deal huh?
Comment posted August 11, 2011 @ 11:27 am
My prediction – in less than twenty years, people like Pawlenty and Bachmann (and Biff) who are preaching against same sex marriage and trying to ban it will be thought of in the same way as slave owners and the KKK are thought of now….just because it doesn’t cause direct physical harm, doesn’t mean it can’t cripple someone’s insides for the rest of their life. It is discriminatory and demoralizing – there is no difference.
