Minneapolis minister under fire for officiating at Twin Cities Pride

Rev. Gregrey Renstrom of Minneapolis’ New Harmony United Methodist Church is facing a formal complaint within the United Methodist Church for his participation in the recent Twin Cities LGBT Pride Festival. The complaint alleges that Renstrom performed blessings for same-sex couples, in violation of the church’s laws, during a mass commitment ceremony held annually at the festival.

According to the complaint, Renstrom was seen on a KARE 11 video performing a commitment ceremony for a couple at the Pride festival on June 25. The story was about legalizing same-sex marriage in New York and defeating a ballot measure that would add a ban on marriage for gays and lesbians to the Minnesota Constitution.

The complaint alleges that Renstrom violated Paragraph 341.6 of The 2008 United Methodist Book of Discipline, which states, “Ceremonies that celebrate homosexual unions shall not be conducted by our ministers and shall not be conducted in our churches.”

“I am not suspending Rev. Renstrom from his ministry with the New Harmony fellowship that meets at the historic Wesley building in Minneapolis,” wrote Bishop Sally Dyck. “He will continue to have the rights and responsibilities of ministry while we follow this process to its outcome. He has agreed not to do any more ‘blessings’ while under complaint.”

Renstrom has notified Dyck that he intended to conduct commitment ceremonies for same-sex couples at Twin Cities Pride.

Earlier in June, more than 70 of Minnesota’s Methodist ministers vowed to defy church law, bless same-sex couples and oppose the proposed constitutional amendment banning marriage for gays and lesbians.

“I would ask that you keep in your prayers Rev. Renstrom, the New Harmony fellowship, the Minnesota Annual Conference (of churches and clergy), The United Methodist Church, and all in our culture who are struggling, hurting, and caring deeply about this matter,” Bishop Dyck said.

Dyck said she is working closely with Renstrom and the church’s disciplinary process to ensure a just result. She has also gone public with the complaint with Renstrom’s support.

They allow “blessings” for your pets but not your homosexual children. And they wonder why people don’t believe in organized religion anymore.

The immorality of people standing in the way of how people want to conduct their religion is terrible.

These ministers have the right to support Same sex unions by the way they serve their God.

Thou shall not …. um …. violate Paragraph 341.6 of The 2008 United Methodist Book of Discipline.

Venial or mortal sin? Hmmm…….

At one church I know of, they bless motorcycles and classic cars along with pets. Yet they won’t bless the union between two committed, loving, monogamous, same-sex adults who want nothing more than to enhance each other’s lives through marriage. Does anyone else see the blatant hypocrisy at work here?

Look on the bright side: The Methodist church has taken its stance…. and its own ministers are defying it. Probably because they too cannot bless the bond between a person and their pet, or, for Pete’s sake, their motorcycle, and deny the bond between a person and their life partner.

There may be a rule against it, but this is how rules get changed. The avalanche for equal rights starts with a tiny tremor, on a bus, at a lunch counter, or at a commitment ceremony; but it only gains momentum from here, and very quickly, it reaches a point at which it cannot be stopped.

Always… ALWAYS… be concerned and aware of any organized religion with outlandish unrealistic claims and rituals with expectations of complete obedience and control without allowing a level of healthy questioning, examination or dispute of reason.

Atheism is worth Googling and looking into… if not to for basic realistic reasoning, but then also for a spiritual liberation from the pathological lies and total brainwashing that has blinded millions of people for hundreds of years.

People, both hetero or gay, are waking up to the illusions and delusion of the belief systems that have been used to manipulate and control the masses.

with your comments about the hypocrisy of this religious organization.

It was extremely highly unlikely that I would ever consider joining the Methodist Church (or any Christian church), but this is the absolute nail in the coffin for Methodists for me. Now I can assume that all Methodists I meet are hypocrites and possible homophobes, and go from there. Just like they assume all homosexuals are not loving, committed, caring and supportive enough to be “allowed” to be “blessed.” (A dubious honor at best.)

Here’s a thought….. The United Methodist Church is a Christian church which bases its beliefs on the infallibility and inherency of the Bible. From the Pentateuch, to the levitical law, to the prophets, to the Gospel, to the Epistles, to Revelations, the Bible clearly and emphatically denounces homosexuality. While this is not “politically correct” today, it is from cover to cover in God’s Word listed as a sin set apart from other sin as being worse and is even stated as being an abomination. So for the Methodist Church to stand in opposition to what God’s word says about homosexuality, would be blasphamous and hypocritical. God doesn’t force anyone to serve Him…He only asks. Jesus said “if you love me then you’ll keep my commandments”. Well a Christian church should love him and should keep his commandments. If this minister can not keep the oath that he vowed then maybe he should leave the church and become a justice of the peace in states like New York where gay marriage is legal so that all parties involved will be happy.

Bill, what exactly did Jesus say about homosexuality? And if homosexuality is such an “abomination” as you say, why isn’t it in the 10 commandments? Also, does this mean that the United Methodist Church is pro-slavery? I know the bibile speaks glowingly of that practise.

Allow me to answer your question and pose one of my own.

Leviticus 18:1,22 “The LORD said to Moses” – “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.”

John 8:58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

John 10:30 “I and the Father are one”

So, the LORD said that having sex with a man as with a woman is detestable “Do not,” and Jesus is the LORD, “I and the Father are one.” If Jesus is God and God said “Do not,” then Jesus said “Do not.”  This seems pretty clear-cut to me that Jesus said homosexuality is a sin.

The Bible is not limited to the 10 commandments.

We are talking about homosexuality, not slavery, so let’s stay focused.

Now for my question: if homosexuality is in line with Christian teaching, where in the Bible does it condone homosexuality? I only listed one of the many references in the Bible that condemn homosexuality. I could provide more if you like. However, all I am asking of you is for one scripture that identifies homosexuality as good.

Many of those who comment have an apparant inability to distinguish between right and wrong. I bless the animals, for the contributions they make to our lives. I would not bless the sexual union of an animal with a beloved pet owner. Let’s be reasonable and consistent with what we are talking about.
