The National Organization for Marriage announced Thursday that GOP presidential candidates Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney have signed the group’s pledge to oppose marriage for same-sex couples at the federal level. The pledge includes support for a federal amendment to the U.S. Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

The New Jersey-based NOM, which opposes marriage and civil unions for same-sex couples, announced the pledge as it gears up for a 22-city Values Voters Bus Tour of Iowa. The tour is expected to include Santorum, as well as former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty who has yet to sign the pledge.

“Marriage is an issue with an unbroken string of victories that unites Republicans, and we’re pleased and honored the leading candidates in the race for the GOP nomination have spoken up for marriage,” said NOM President Brian Brown. “We expect the voters of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina will continue to reward candidates who champion marriage.”

The pledge asked candidates to support five of the group’s goals:

Support and send to the states a federal marriage amendment defining marriage as one man and one woman, defend DOMA in court, appoint judges and an attorney general who will respect the original meaning of the Constitution, appoint a presidential commission to investigate harassment of traditional marriage supporters, and support legislation that would return to the people of D.C. their right to vote for marriage.

I truly hope for the day that marriage in the United States of America will be celebrated (not merely tolerated) whether you’re an opposite sex couple or same sex couple.

This so called “conservative” argument holds very little water. All somebody needs to do is study the history of marriage throughout the ages and cultures across this globe to understand that “it” (marriage) has been defined many ways and changed many times.

In my opinion, the debate isn’t a partisan debate, but a skillful art of crafting one’s religious beliefs into our constitution, the very constitution that grants them the right to practice that very belief openly.

It all sounds like abuse of power to me.

the GOP pledge:

the American Psychological Association (APA) unanimously approved the resolution 157-0 on the eve of the group’s annual convention, which opens here today.

The group, with more than 154,000 members, has long supported full equal rights for gays, based on social science research on sexual orientation. Now the nation’s psychologists — citing an increasing body of research about same-sex marriage, as well as increased discussion at the state and federal levels — took the support to a new level.

“Now as the country has really begun to have experience with gay marriage, our position is much clearer and more straightforward — that marriage equity is the policy that the country should be moving toward,” says Clinton Anderson, director of APA’s Office on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns.

The resolution points to numerous recent studies, including findings that “many gay men and lesbians, like their heterosexual counterparts, desire to form stable, long-lasting and committed intimate relationships and are successful in doing so.”

It adds that “emerging evidence suggests that statewide campaigns to deny same-sex couples legal access to civil marriage are a significant source of stress to the lesbian, gay and bisexual residents of those states and may have negative effects on their psychological well-being.”

It’s amusing to see a Mormon (Romney) take a stand on “traditional” marriage. In his religion, traditional marriage features one husband (male) and many wives (female). Wow! Please explain that to us Mitt.

The evidence is in. Just look at New York: swarms of locusts are now destroying everything in sight. The earth has cracked open near Buffalo, and pouring out of it are millions of demons with swords in their hands and blasphemies on their lips. (Actually, that might make Buffalo interesting for once, but I digress.) As if overnight, huge numbers of husbands are leaving their wives, and wives their husbands, for now they no longer have to suffer in the stifling and self-denying confines of heterosexual marriage–they can at long last find a same sex partner to marry. What about the kids? Kids, shmids. Who really needs ‘em? Yes, pious one, the Family(TM) is now on the brink of collapse.

Gay marriage is battering down the walls of God’s castle, the family. Indeed all moral values are at stake, suspended as if above a meat grinder by the hand of evil Marxism-Liberalism. The country is on the verge of falling into the ocean under the rapidly increasing weight of ungodly sodomites. The sun is about to stop shining on Jesus’ favorite planet.

Beware. BEWARE! The Gay Agenda(TM) is coming for you! It’s coming for your family, your kids, your Bible AND your porn collection. Grandpa’s crossword puzzle will soon be filled with references to secretive and unwholesome gay sex acts. The American flag will curl up and die and God’s most favoritist country will pass away. Socialism-marxism-fascism-communism-liberalism-same sex marriage (they’re all the same thing)–are about to become the basis of America at the bidding of dictator Obama, by command of George Soros and the UN, which in are turn taking orders from the secular humanist conspiracy, which in its turn refers ultimately back to Satan himself!

Close ranks, dear Values Voters, and hear the call of patriotic white American Christianly duty. Hear the humble and pious voices of Tom Prichard and NOM calling you to new heights of intolerance-love and hate-filled holiness.

The fate of the universe depends on you stopping two women from expressing their love for each other in a public legal ceremony on a Saturday afternoon in June.

This is pretty offensive on many levels. I can barely wait till November of next year to get these buffoons out of their offices.

Hate-pledges from our Presidential candidates. What a sad state of affairs. Where is the outrage?
