Klobuchar sponsors Defense of Marriage Act repeal

Long a holdout in signing on to back the Respect for Marriage Act, Sen. Amy Klobuchar indicated this week she’ll sponsor the bill, which would repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Klobuchar is the last Democratic member of the Senate Judiciary Committee to back the measure after Sen. Herb Kohl of Wisconsin expressed his support in April. Fellow Democrat Al Franken was an original sponsor of the act.
Noting Klobuchar’s silence on the measure, local and national groups pressed Klobuchar to take a stance on the bill last spring, and the Minnesota Independent reported in March that she would vote in support of the act, which would abolish the federal ban on relationship rights for same-sex couples.
The same groups again pressed Klobuchar last month to attach her name as a cosponsor, and on Tuesday she did. Klobuchar became the 29th senator to give complete support for the bill.
The bill had its first hearing on July 20, a hearing during which Franken called out a member of Focus on the Family for what Franken saw as misleading testimony.

Why didn’t Dems move on this when they had the House? It makes a good statement, but has no chance of passing either chamber.

We can do much better than Senator Klobuchar. She’s consistently last to support any LGBT legislation after precious money, time and energy have been spent in educating and lobbying her to do the right thing. We deserve a Senator who has the skills, courage and leadership to be a more effective and efficient representative. Leading from behind is a recipe for failure.

Klobuchar, while smart about many things, is proving to be the quintessential play-it-safe within the system type of politician. I know–no great revelation to anyone following her career in the Senate. And don’t get me started on her and health care reform.
If she supports gay marriage, and I doubt she’s thought about it so little that she’s only recently made up her mind about it, then it appears that she felt she had to wait for others to take the lead before she felt safe in doing so herself.
We need leadership from Amy on LGBT equality (and this is coming from a married straight guy), not career-minded caution in the face of the LGBT version of the Klan–NOM.

Way to be a leader Amy. Not.
It’s depressing to hear about her high approval rating when she really couldn’t be more milquetoast (timid/submissive) as a senator from Minnesota.

Senator Klobuchar does NOT support marriage equality. She supports a separate and unequal status – the stigma of civil unions. Civil unions are not portable or recognized around the globe. They provide zero Federal benefits and protections for Gay Americans. They are essentially worthless and actually much more problematic. No one is asking for civil unions. If marriage is good enough for the Senator, her husband and family, well that’s good enough for me and my family.

What I find frustrating as someone who voted for her whole-heartedly, is knowing that she refused to take a stand against the discrimination of LGBTQ kids and families in the Anoka-Hennepin school district, citing it was “out of her jurisdiction”.
She’s spoken publically for dairy farmers, victims of the 35W bridge collapse, and lent her voice to issues effecting kids specifically, like advocating for international adoption to insure kids from other countries have the opportunity to have a good life. Was very vocal against the import of toxic toys which in turn will keep kids safe, and had no problem being a pesonal champion for Abigayle Taylor, the little girl tragically injured, and who lost her life in a pool drain accident.
As a prosecuter in Hennepin County she had no problem sticking up for those who’d been wronged and going after those who hurt them. So to hear she felt defending kids who’ve been systematically discriminated against and who are told on a daily basis that “they are less than” their straight peers, to hear this was “out of her jurisdiction” was to say the very least a disappointment.
I sent an email back in May asking her again to please reconsider her decision to remain silent, especially since she’s clearly spoken on behalf of other kids across multiple jurisdictions, multiple times…..I’m still waiting on a response.

Silence = Death.
Senator Klobuchar has consistently put her political ambitions first while leading from behind. Her strategic path at the back of the line is like held breath. Milquetoast. She mislead many of us.

I am sorry I voted for Amy on the last election. Though I feel all people need to be treated kindly and with respect. The act of homosexuality is an abomination and is sinful. Any person who is voting to allow gay marriages is encouraging this activity in these people lives. I will not be a part of this and I will not turn my back on what is truly right. I have gay relatives and I love them, but it pains me to know they are living a life of sin with non-repentant hearts. We are all sinners, but we need to recognize this and ask for forgiveness and rely on the Lord’s strength to set us on the right path. My message is not one of hate, but one of love for all people and wants them to live godly lives.
