AFL-CIO votes unanimously to oppose anti-gay marriage amendment
Tuesday, August 09, 2011 at 8:20 am
The Minnesota AFL-CIO, the state’s labor federation, voted on Monday to oppose a ballot measure that would add a ban on same-sex marriage to the Minnesota Constitution. The vote of the general board was unanimous in oppositon to the amendment which will be on the ballot in 2012. The AFL-CIO is made up of 1,000 affiliated local unions and represents more than 300,000 workers.
“The labor movement is, and has always been about protecting and advancing the rights of all people,” Minnesota AFL-CIO President Shar Knutson said in a statement on Monday. “We will not stand by and allow discrimination to become part of Minnesota’s constitution.”
In addition to the AFL-CIO, AFSCME Council 5 and the SEIU have also announced opposition to the amendment.
Here’s full text of the resolution passed on Monday.
Opposition to 2012 Ballot Question Recognizing Marriage as Only Between One Man and One Woman
WHEREAS: Whereas, the mission of the Minnesota AFL-CIO is to improve the lives of working families and to bring economic justice to the workplace and social justice to our state; and
WHEREAS: Trade unionists believe that civil rights are vital to a just society and all families should have access to the benefits they need and deserve; and
WHEREAS: The United States General Accounting Office has documented that over 1,000 federal benefits and protections acquired by civil marriage are not available to same sex couples; including the ability to collect social security benefits, pension or death benefits in the event of a partner’s death, ability to receive benefits under the Family and Medical Leave Act to care for a sick partner or child; and
WHEREAS: State-sanctioned civil marriage provides rights and responsibilities set out in over 500 Minnesota laws available to opposite sex couples, but not same sex couples; including negotiated health coverage for state and local public employees, workers’ compensation, unemployment benefits paid to a survivors, and laws affecting couples during illness and even death; and
WHEREAS: Trade unionists believe that our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender brothers and sisters undeniably deserve the same benefits as their heterosexual counterparts; and
WHEREAS: The Minnesota Constitution has never been amended to discriminate against any group of people by denying them civil rights; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the Minnesota AFL-CIO opposes the 2012 general election ballot question recognizing marriage as only between one man and one woman.

Wonderful! Thank you for taking a stand
That’s a pretty powerful resolution.

If this is a vote by the full membership of the AFLCIO, then it sure doesn’t say much for morals of that organization. God hates this filthy lifestyle.

@Mary – Hiding behind your imaginary fairy tale as justification for your bigotry is what’s disgusting. The only ‘filthy lifestyle’ is the one that comes with lies and a need to push your bigotry on others… again, YOURS.
I applaud the AFL-CIOs stance!

What about SEIU MN Council? They’re a Minnesotans United for All Families coalition member.

Way to go, AFL-CIO. Thanks for standing up for equality for every citizen, especially in the face of religious bigotry.

@Mary,
That is one of the most unintelligent things i have ever read on this site.
All the women that fought to vote would frown at seeing it.
It is good to see such a large group on the correct side of history.

It’s not a vote by the membership but by the leadership. Even so the fact that it was unanimous is impressive and encouraging. They probably also realize after you constitutionally restrict one group’s rights then it will only be a matter of time until the next group is targeted and it might be them.

Did he/she/it/entity tell you? So as a woman, you live your life threw a book written BY Men, for Men…to keep the sheeple in line, and in Fear..the coffers full $$ KA-CHING!!! and to keep women SILENT! Look up your own history deary, in the early 20th century – religion was used to PREVENT women from having a RIGHT to VOTE….Look it up honey, before you try to trample on the RIGHTS of others…..don’t be a douche.

This is indeed one of the most unintelligent things I’ve read on this web site in a while.
Just a question: You know God’s will but your neighbor doesn’t? You have special access to God simply on account of being you? Is your self-esteem so low that you must convince yourself that you’re more special in God’s eyes than many other people?

Does the anti-Family Party believe that Republican women have the right to vote? You’d never guess it by the way the refer to Republican women candidates.

Way to go! The show of support shows the high morality and strong sense of community. For real morality is within equality, and social justice. We need to stand up to the fear and bigotry of those like Mary.
Mary, I am a woman, a straight woman, with little children. married to the same man twice as long as I have had children. we own a home, cars, are tax paying, extremely involved parents. I stay home with my children. I couldn’t LIVE A MORE CONSERVATIVE lifestyle. I can tell you that I wouldn’t let you alone with my children.
The way to beat this bigotry is through straight alliances, this is a good start.

“God hates this filthy lifestyle.”
I always wonder what kind of life the people who make these statements must have? It must be a very sad and depressing one. What happened to them? How did they become so very hateful? I would assume it stems from a sense of powerlessness or inability to control their own destiny, I really don’t know, but I can’t imagine going through life this way. Very sad indeed.

It can only help if one group of people whose rights are under assault stand up for another group of people whose rights are under assault. I hope the gay rights organizations will get as solidly behind labor as the AFL-CIO appears to be behind marriage equality. Marrying who you want is a right, and joining a union is a right. neither should be subject tot he whim of whoever runs the government at the moment.

Our dearly departed Harvey Milk had the labor unions in his corner! One back can scratch the other. Only by UNITING together against the true “filth” known as the GOP will we EVER hope to truly eradicate this right wing menace to all of humanity! ‘Nuff said!!

MN Constitution, Art. 1
“Sec. 2. Rights and privileges. No member of this state shall be disfranchised or deprived of any of the rights or privileges secured to any citizen thereof, unless by the law of the land or the judgment of his peers. There shall be neither slavery nor involuntary servitude in the state otherwise than as punishment for a crime of which the party has been convicted.”
“Sec. 16. Freedom of conscience; no preference to be given to any religious establishment or mode of worship. The enumeration of rights in this constitution shall not deny or impair others retained by and inherent in the people. The right of every man to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience shall never be infringed; nor shall any man be compelled to attend, erect or support any place of worship, or to maintain any religious or ecclesiastical ministry, against his consent; nor shall any control of or interference with the rights of conscience be permitted, or any preference be given by law to any religious establishment or mode of worship; but the liberty of conscience hereby secured shall not be so construed as to excuse acts of licentiousness or justify practices inconsistent with the peace or safety of the state, nor shall any money be drawn from the treasury for the benefit of any religious societies or religious or theological seminaries.”
“Section 1. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PROPOSED.
An amendment to the Minnesota Constitution is proposed to the people. If the amendment is adopted, a section shall be added to article XIII, to read:
Sec. 13. Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.”
This proposed amendment itself violates 2 sections of the state Constitution. Not to mention the federal Constitution.
I am not impressed with the selective constitution enforcement crowd, they’re just not that into the whole rule-of-law thing that makes this country work.

AFL-CIO is about as average middle class as you can get. They are UNANIMOUSLY opposed to the anti-gay marriage ammendment. Think about this people. How many people do you know that are in the AFL-CIO? These are your average Minnesotains. They like to fish every weedend during the summer. Heck, they like to fish every weekend during the winter. THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH GAY MARRIAGE!!!! The paid posters, such as Mary above me, are about as un-ameriacan as anyone can get.

@Zera,
That is an odd writing. The constitution and the amendment oppose one another. Even a lttle peanut like me could write better than that.

Zera Lee, Thank you for the actuals. The facts. I screamed them all the time, but its nice to say hey here, look, I am not making this up!
These are the people that say things like “founding fathers wanted” well here is what they wanted!
The extremists just don’t see that its absolutely nothing different than what they are doing compared to what we went through with native Americans, African Americans, Women’s rights, Women’s rights in marriage (oh look at that Marriage has changed a million times since it has been made up by man which was not so long ago, what? Marriage is a new thing? not an ancient thing..oh sorry rant back to topic), all the other civil right’s changes……
Once again… takes out soap box.. Stands on soap box, …. Takes out bull horn…. starts screaming… YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SUPPORT WHAT YOU MUST ACCEPT. steps off soap box.
Facts are facts. Equality does not force you into supporting anything. It does not change your right to think the way you want to think, Live the lifestyle of your choice (religion is a choice) or preach and indoctrinate your children with those thoughts.
But it does mean you can NOT indoctrinate me with those thoughts!

My utmost respect for Shar Knutson and her leadership of the MNAFLCIO.
The working class citizens of Minnesota will be in this fight right up until election day. This bigoted and GOP “voter issue” will not stand in our state. We will not be tricked into voting for the rich and against ourselves any longer. This issue is only meant to split the liberal vote at the polls. Don’t fall for this cheap tactic Minnesota voters. The GOP could care less who gets married to who in Minnesota. They only want to split the vote of the common man so the rich can keep their hands in our taxpayer cookie jar. And thank God for Mark Dayton, although that last budget deal really sucked Mark. Tax the Rich Dammit. But, let’s be fair, this is Minnesota, after all
