Not-so-big tent: RNC host committee pushed for cancellation of Ron Paul, Rage Against the Machine events

Here’s a behind-the-scenes postscript about the lengths to which the planners of the Republican National Convention went to ensure the appearance of a discord-free GOP: They tried to scuttle Ron Paul’s counter-convention across the river in Minneapolis and the next night’s Rage Against the Machine concert as well.

Speaking on background, well-placed sources at City Hall and Target Center have confirmed to MnIndy that in the days before Ron Paul’s Rally for the Republic at Target Center was publicly announced, representatives of the RNC Host Committee contacted officials at Target Center and the city of Minneapolis (which oversees the facility) to push for the cancellation of the event. They also sought the cancellation of the Rage Against the Machine concert that took place at Target Center on September 3, the third night of the RNC.

A City Haller familiar with the situation says that Mayor RT Rybak’s office was contacted by Host Committee members who wanted the mayor’s assistance in seeing to it that the events were canceled. He refused to cooperate, adds the source. I phoned Rybak’s office; he declined to be interviewed. But his communication director, Jeremy Hanson, had this to say: “We don’t dispute the characterization of events, but the mayor’s office doesn’t wish to comment further.”

I left a message this morning seeking a response from Jeff Larson, the RNC Host Committee’s CEO. He has not returned the call. If/when he does, I’ll add an update.

(Larson is perhaps better known as a founder of the Feather Larson Synhorst group, a top-drawer GOP fundraising/marketing outfit, and as Norm Coleman’s DC landlord.)

Rage Against the Machine should just be happy the McCain campaign hasn't stolen one of their songs yet.

Although I oppose the federal Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act, the Republican Party obviously fits the definition of organizations it was designed to destroy and therefore the entire Republican Party should be prosecuted under RICO.
Furthermore, the best way to get rid of bad laws is to enforce them, so long as no innocent person is injured and the Republican Party has very few innocent persons other than Ron Paul.

Is Ron Paul even still a Republican? As far as I know, he still holds office as one, but I've heard from various sources that he was Independent, Libertarian and even [rumored to be] running for presidency for the Constitution party.

Ron Paul has been a Republican for over 20 years. He was an “official” Libertarian for a very short period of time, 1-2 years I think.
Ron Paul represents what a true Republican is “limited government, true conservative, no needless wars, etc.”
With the current scums running the GOP, I don't blame you for not reconizing a true Republican since we haven't seen one in a very long time.

But to clarify on the Libertarian bit, yes Ron Paul is a Libertarian because he believes in Liberty, that's what a Libertarian is. Everyone who believes in liberty is a Libertarian.

It's hardly surprising that the corn-pone fascists of the republican party seek to use government to suppress any view but their own. It's more of a surprise that the Mayor resisted.

He ran as Libertarian for President in 88. He was a Republican prior to and after the election. His campaign (08) was aimed at revamping the GOP and bringing truth back to their policies. Seeing that McCain and his cronies are more corrupt than the rest and that the GOP is … practically beyond repair, he suggests that everyone votes with their conscience – and preferably for a 3rd party nominee – any 3rd party nominee. Barr is not 3rd party, btw. He's a giant jackass.

Also, Paul's not running as a constitutionalist, but he will appear on the Montana ballot for the Constitutionalists. Peeps in Montana, send a message! Any other Paul supporters should check out Chuck Baldwin – the actual Constitutionalist candidate. He's a lot like Ron Paul, and best of all – he lives by the constitution, something we all need to push for.

…Nothing surprises me from the Republican Party anymore. Nevada's State Republican Convention (held in Reno) turned into a mirror of pre-1989 Russian politics – Ron Paul won the vote in the largest county in Nevada (Nye), the convention was filled with Ron Paul supporters, things weren't going the way the GOP had scripted, and then the convention was ended abruptly. Unlike during the National Convention where “chaparones” were used to “herd” Ron Paul delegates, the Nevada GOP didn't know how to counteract the Ron Paul supporters other than to literally “turn out the lights”. Having been a life-long Republican, this SICKENS ME.

Oh yeah, and +1 for the mayor who upheld his duty and refused to intervene. And the Target Center for having the cojones to put on both shows (even though RATM are just as fascist in ideology as the RNC, maybe this will set an example for them to stop brainwashing our kids with cool guitar riffs).

Wow. hadn't heard about this one. I think the city and especially the Target Center were wise not to allow this. The Paulers are a motivated bunch to begin with and to steer that motivation towards something like revenge seems less than prudent. IMO

The Republican NAZI Party just keeps showing their Fascist side over and over. We will be sure to posts this info in every blog and YouTube video that we go to plus send it to thousands of our contacts.

We The People SHOULD start a Class Action Suit against the LSM (Lame Stream Media) and the Demopublican Party for the INJUSTICE that We The People have been shown in this SELECTION year.

VOTE NONE OF THE ABOVE!!

VOTE 3rd Party or Write In but do NOT vote for the Demopublican Party.

In case you are wondering the Demopublican Party is the Single Major Party comprised of the Republicans and the Democrats. They are BOTH extremely CORRUPT and are the reason our great country is in such a mess today.

G.O.P. now stands for “God's Own Party.” Anyone who belongs to this G.O.P. is not a true American let alone a Republican. We need a new Republican party that focuses on the ideology Ron Paul is promoting.

Ron Paul is the true Republican. The Republican party has been hijacked by fascists like bush, cheney, mccain and others

Frankly that would have been the stupidest thing they could have done, they are lucky that no one canceled the Rally and left 11,000 revolutionaries with no where to go and nothing to do….except to go bother the “Republicans”.

Why am I not surprised? Two of my friends were delegates and said that they were treated horribly by The Party Faithful, and I mean goons following them and surveiling people, grilling them to get information on what “disruption” they planned (what a laugh, if you could see these two gals…), refusing to give information, not allowing them to cast their votes and the list goes on. That they would try to shut down our counter-convention is no surprise at all. The surprise is that they didn't succeed and that the mayor stood up to these goons (kudos!).

I guess it was a successful Coronation with all the glitz, glitter and lipstick, despite so many Paul supporters in town.

Barr may be the LP nominee, but he's no libertarian, and he did NOT get nominated by a majority of our delegates–only 49.7%, on the 6th ballot. He does NOT represent the LP membership, and as an LP member who would never vote for him, on behalf of the LP, I apologize for that twerp.

Dear sir, We all know as Ron Paul supporters that the hegemony of both of the “status quo ” parties is to allow, not free speech and our right to assemble to redress issues, put to suppress those constitutional liberties, of a ” controlled ” police state. This was quite evident during the Republican National Convention, when they refused to allow Congressman Ron Paul to speak and shunned him entirely. They know , as well as the ” power-shakers ” in Washington that Congressman Ron Paul is the greatest threat to their plans of a ” New World Order “. We the people across this nation will not go away, and we shall take our country back, and restore the blessings of liberty, not just for ourselves, but for all people all over the world who want peace and justice for all. I commend all of you at your newspaper for printing this story and God bless all of you. Long live the Revolution!!!

Good for Mayor Rybak! Anyone who votes for the Evil Party, and McManiac and his VP, McClone, is crazy. This bunch of fascists has been in office for 8 years and it's time to get them out. Vote third-party and stop the madness!

Oh how this parallels the Russians. Actually we have come to mirror all the oppressive governments of the world.
>in “America: The Global Pioneer Of Torture”, Andrew Sullivan exposes the story the media doesn't tell you. The U.S. is more supportive of torture than any communist country. http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/2224950/3345…

>”India's use of brain scans in courts dismays critics” – For years, scientists have peered into the brain and sought to identify deception. They have shot infrared beams through liars' heads, placed them in giant magnetic resonance imaging machines and used scanners to track their eyeballs. Since the Sept. 11 attacks, the United States has plowed money into brain-based lie detection in the hope of producing more fruitful counterterrorism investigations.

> Detaining children like Hitler. “The 12-year-old son of an American-educated Pakistani woman whom US authorities have charged as an al-Qaeda operative has been handed over to Pakistani authorities in Afghanistan”

What happened to our great country?
