Ames Straw Poll results: Bachmann, Paul, Pawlenty take top three

AMES, Iowa — Not surprisingly, charismatic Congresswoman Michele Bachmann took top prize the 2011 Ames Straw Poll with 4,823 votes.

Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) placed second with 4,671 votes.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty took third with 2,293 votes.

Bachmann emphasized her Iowa roots during her remarks Saturday, and spoke little of her life and political record in the state of Minnesota. She preceded her Straw Poll presence Friday afternoon at the Iowa State Fair, where she took the opportunity to make one last Straw Poll appeal.

It worked.

Paul, a long-time Congressman and doctor also appeared to win over many attendees Saturday, as he received multiple standing ovations as he emphatically stated his anti-abortion, anti-war, limited-government platform. The Texan has campaigned heavily in Iowa prior to the Straw Poll, and won the poll’s auction, spending $31,000 on prime real estate that had been taken by 2007 Straw Poll winner Mitt Romney four years ago.

Pawlenty, often characterized as being too nice by political pundits, shed his “Minnesota nice” persona during Thursday’s presidental debate to lash out at Bachmann, saying her congressional record is “nonexistent.”

A total of 16,892 people cast votes in the 2011 Ames Straw Poll.

The full results:

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn) — 4,823
U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) — 4,671
Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty — 2,293
Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn) — 1,657
Businessman Herman Cain — 1,456
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney –  567
Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich — 385
Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Jr. — 69
U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich) — 35

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who was not on the ballot, received 718 write-in votes.

Does anyone know if there was anybody else that received some votes for this straw poll? Because the results do not add up to 16892, there’s a little over 200 votes missing from this tally. Did they quote the wrong number of voters? Or were there a bunch of random write-in names? Either way with the victor being decided by less than 200 votes I figure its a decent question.

Did anyone see Bachmann on Meet the Press Sunday morning? Gregory played some of the choicest Bachmann chips of her ranting about Gays and then tried to get some answers from her. As always, she wouldn’t answer his questions and tried to steer the conversation back to Obama. To his credit, Gregory really pushed, but no to avail. I think it really rattled her however. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look so uncomfortable.

Babe – you ain’t seen nothin yet. You won’t be able to get away with this crap forever. You’re in the big time now not the brain dead 6th District.

Ron Paul:

He has never taken a government junket.

He does not participate in the lucrative Congressional Pension Program.

He returns a portion of his annual Congressional Office Budget every
year.

He has never voted to raise taxes.

He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.

He voted no to the bankster bailout.

He voted no to raising the debt ceiling and warned us against
the “Super Congress” part of the legislation that resembles both
an “ Enabling Act” and a “Politburo.”

He has never voted to restrict gun ownership.

He has never voted to raise Congressional Pay.

He never voted to increase Executive Branch Power.

He will Reinstate The Constitution and Save The Republic

He will END the unconstitutional FED.

He will phase out the unconstitutional IRS beginning immediately

He will secure the borders

He will limit Big Government in your private affairs

He will stop Illegal immigration and no amnesty

He voted against regulating the Internet

He is the only candidate for President in 2012 who actually served his country.

He was a flight surgeon during Vietnam.

Ron Paul’s popularity is so high among U.S. service members that the Texas
Congressman’s presidential campaign has received more money from U.S.
soldiers than any other candidate in the 2012 presidential race.

He voted against the Iraq War and warned us against going forward with
an undeclared war.“Let it not be said that no one cared, that
no one objected once it’s realized that our liberty and wealth are in
Jeopardy” July 10th, 2003

He voted against the un-patriotic so called Patriot Act.

He supports a non-interventionist foreign policy yet a strong military

He will end the inflation tax He is a true Constitutional
Conservative

He would have soundly beat Obama in 2008 because Independents trust him and like him.

We could have had a V8 instead of McCain’t in 08

Ron Paul for President 2012

Because no one else can be trusted to say what he
means and do what he says like Ron Paul does.

Ron Paul is the man of the hour. They used to laugh him for being way ahead
of the others in his thinking and his warnings. Now, they are not
laughing because what he predicted is coming to pass. Now, he is being called
a prophet for having warned us and still calmly suffered through the
barbs. “First they, ignore you, then they fight you, then you
win.” Gandhi

Bachmann is a joke as is Paul, Romney belongs to a cult not appreciated by the base Christians, Newt? Give me a break, Pawlenty is out, Johnson is a certified nut, Huntsman is a Morman like Romney. Rick Perry would do well if only right wing Christians were votin.

The Republicans are painting themselvs into a corner. A very extreme right wing corner.
