Audits force illegal immigrants to find underground work
Monday, August 15, 2011 at 10:51 am
Miriam Jordan of The Wall Street Journal reports on a pseudonymous couple who illegally entered the U.S. from Mexico to settle in Minneapolis. They held jobs paying well over the minimum wage, plus benefits, before the Obama Administration began cracking down on employers. Both of them now work lower-paid jobs and work for less than the minimum wage.
More about the audits:
The audits, started by the Obama administration in 2009, put the onus on business to police workers, requiring companies to turn over employee records to federal agents. If the papers aren’t in order, the workers are quietly let go without penalty while the companies are punished.
The audits, conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, a unit of the Department of Homeland Security, were initially hailed by some immigrant advocates as more humane because they eliminate deportation raids, the norm during the Bush administration.
But it has become increasingly clear that the policy is pushing undocumented workers deeper underground, delivering them to the hands of unscrupulous employers, depressing wages and depriving federal, state and local coffers of taxes, according to unions, companies and immigrant advocates.
It’s not clear whether their employer, ABM, looked the other way or the couple simply provided false documents. Employers are required to accept documents for an I-9 form or else be open to charges of employment discrimination. Either way, they were treated well — the husband made up to just over $14 an hour, and both entitled to paid vacation and sick days.
Minnesota required the use of E-Verify for state employees and contractors doing more than $50,000 in business with the state from 2008 until 2011, when Gov. Mark Dayton reversed the executive order of Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
With the recession and increased immigration enforcement, it’s unlikely that the couple will find other jobs that pay well above minimum wage and include benefits.

Boo Hoo, are we supposed to feel sorry for illegals who lost their job? Sorry, they are not supposed to be in this country or working, so no sympathy whatesoever for them. Using false ID as a crime as well. Those jobs should be going to legal Americans and the illegals deported!

Well, what did they expect? I know someone who has a LEGAL work visa, is HIGHLY SKILLED, EDUCATED and when it’s up, he has to go back to France. He’d love to stay and be a citizen but the lawyer fees and all the paper work is beyond ridiculous. Why should he have to go back but these people aren’t deported to where they came from?
I’m not racist but I can’t help notice all of these ethnic families that somehow got into our Country, hardly speak the language and do what? BREED LIKE RABBITS then expect government handouts from the taxpayers.

“Ethnic families… BREED LIKE RABBITS,” Mike? You mean, Norwegians? Or are you bashing me and my Irish and German ilk?
Also, nice try with the “I’m not racist, but” caveat.

Wow for once the government is doing something to help citizens!!
Thank you and keep sending the illegal workers back to where they came from.

Mike – I agree with you. They do BREED LIKE RABBITS, don’t learn the language, take jobs away from TAX PAYING citizens & are a strain on the economy, and medicare systems. This country all ready has enough people manipulating social welfare, no need to un-necessarily add more.
Paul – my family is Italian, my grandparents came here from Italy. The gained their citizenship, paid their taxes and their dues as well as LEARNED THE LANGUAGE. They didn’t come here looking for handouts, so, I believe that Mike’s comment is not bashing the TRUE immigrants who came here looking for a new life, not to damage ours.
I work & live in an expensive community. Why? Because I thought that I could afford to go to my local grocery and talk to like minded people, NOT because I wanted to go buy an egg sandwich and have 2 cashiers and a stock boy shouting Spanish over my head (which is what has been happening the past 2 years).
Send them back home. I hope they start doing this on Long Island.

Good for you and your family, Julia, but that’s not what I was addressing.

Most people would classify me as a liberal, but when it comes to illegal immigrants I have no sympathy – none – not a drop – not even for the kids – nope. They are ILLEGAL and nothing will change that. If nothing else it’s a total slap in the face to all the immigrants who do the right thing and go through the process necessary to enter our country. We cannot afford to take care of everyone in the world. We can’t.

@ Paul Schmelzer
I’m speaking of the Somali and the Mung ethnic groups that the BUSH administration allowed into this country. They treat their women like BABY MAKING MACHINES and yes, if you do some research, this is a FACT. Their wives are horribly suppressed and abused as well.
With that, I’m also referring to the Hispanic people (who I adore and I actually vacation in Mexico every year) but if they are illegal, then they don’t belong here taking away the jobs of born AMERICANS unless you believe differently and I and the posters would love to hear your comments.
If you look at what Sweden is going through (get on YouTube and search Swedish and Muslim Crisis) then you might start to understand where I’m coming from and the intention of my post.
Can you blame me or the other tax paying BORN AMERICANS for not wanting foreigners swarming into our country to suck off the government and add to the ridiculous unemployment rates? Sweden is in a state of CRISIS over allowing the Muslims in who BREED LIKE RABBITS then create chaos to the peaceful society.

Mike: I take issue with your stereotyping and your apparent ignorance about the definition of the word “ethnic,” not your opinions on whether illegal immigration is a problem. That said, it’s you who need to do some research. Hmong people — with an H — have been coming to the U.S. since 1976 (the Ford administration). They’re refugees endangered in their own country, Laos, for fighting on our behalf in Vietnam, a move that didn’t endear them to the communists who took over there in ’75. Somalis, too, have refugee status. That is: The vast majority of Hmong and Somali people who are here are not illegal. If you propose to reform the refugee system, fine, but that’s a different topic than what this article is about.

Who cares where they go, as long as it is far away. We are sick of this imported poverty and the American taxpayers picking up the tab. We are broke, go home.

Wow, it looks like rural Alabama finally got an internet connection and this was the first page they saw…
Certainly we need immigration reform, but I think we also need a humanitarian reform of values and thinking.
I understand the frustration and anger at illegal immigration. I equally understand the desire to make a better life for oneself and family, and the intolerability of exploitation and mistreatment of anyone regardless of their legal status.
The callous comments on this page reflect more on the comment makers than they can possibly imagine. All sorts of unexamined impulses, categories of half-truths, petty intolerances, incomplete information, programmed but unconscious sadism, the psychology of race/socioeconomic privilege, and more, are all at work in the dirty business of closing doors of sympathy and building walls of fear and anger.
Is a Latino immigrant here illegally? Step aside from this question for a moment and consider your duties to humanity.
That Latino man sweeping your floor after working hours–you may be surprised to learn that he likes the same music as you do, and similar movies. He also likes a full belly after a hard day at work, just like you do. When his wife puts her hand on his shoulder he feels it just like the hand of your girlfriend.
That favorite book you liked in your teens was also the favorite book of that Somali student, and you could have a great conversation with her about it. But no, she’s wearing a veil, therefore she’s not fully human like you are. To you she is a series of projected ideas and categories, and therefore fully comprehendible, or so you believe. But in actuality you’ve rendered her wholly or partially invisible. But you don’t even know that, since this is how you’ve been unconsciously led to react.
How quickly the ‘good citizen’ wants to tidy his mind and push things out of his attention. How quickly the finger will be pointed at the illegal immigrant, while the workings of money and power are given a free pass. And no connection is seen between them.

Paul: Thanks for the spelling correction. True, it’s Hmong. My bad. You can feel better now. Excuse me about my use of Ethnic if that truly offends you. I’m open minded enough to realize when perhaps I didn’t use the right wording.
Hmong Veterans’ Naturalization Act of 2000. Almost 170,000 Hmong have immigrated to the United States. They didn’t even have to pass the English Language requirement. They started to come in during the Bush administration. They treat their wives poorly and use them as baby making machines. It’s seriously sick. But guess what, they have more civil rights than the gays and they haven’t been here paying taxes as long let alone not being born Americans. Just one more reason the gay community is furious… as they should be. The US government will take in foreigners who don’t speak the language but then they’ll treat AMERICAN BORN gays like second class citizens.
So should we, in our current situation, be taking in the world’s refugees? I think not. Should illegal immigrants be allowed to stay in the USA? Nope, I don’t think so. Even if my own “ethnic” people were here in the USA, I don’t think they should be allowed to stay. Visit, sure! By all means… but not take unlawful residence. If they have a work visa, that is different.
So Paul, are you going to offer up any real opinion on the matter or are you just focused on picking on my (Hmong) misspelling or my use of one (Ethnic) word? You don’t seem to offer much else up to the conversation.

Yea.They held jobs Americans should have been doing. Maybe it’s time these illegal aliens go back to where they belong with their families…and oh, don’t forget your anchor babies you think are U.S. citizens. They are not.

Eric, you know I always love your well thought out comments. You bring such a fresh light of truth and perspective to the conversation. You have a wonderful way with words and forming a story. Aside from all the “warm fuzzies” we’d all love to have while singing, holding hands and looking into each others eyes with heartfelt compassion and human kindness… the truth is there are social dynamics that aren’t working so well in some of the recent “ethnic” (yes. OMG I used it again, don’t throw tomatoes please) groups that aren’t acclimating well and the burden is on the hospitals, the police departments, fire departments, prison system the tax payers along with lack of jobs and economy. There is a MUCH bigger picture and ripple effect… I think we are starting to see some of that ripple effect though. I’ve used the Muslims in Sweden as a prime example (YouTube search it)… they are in a state of crisis then you get racist hate groups forming or people blowing up buildings and gunning people down. (Norway)
GULP… OH NO! I’m starting to sound REPUBLICAN (quick get the repellent spray!!!)
I’m done babbling for the night.

If one carries these diatribes to their logical conclusions, the only non-illegal people in our midst are the Original People, the indigenous people, the native Americans, the Indians! Did your ancestors have papers? I didn’t think so. Many of the comments here are sounding very racist to me.

Lulz, this is a joke right? “Dude, love your tacos, but stay in your own country.” I think that’s the funniest thing I’ve read all year.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’ll briefly explain why we have such an immense and damaging problem with illegal aliens. While Democrats are calling Tea-party members Terrorists, for being American citizens expressing their discontent with the gov’t. the same Democrats are fighting tooth and nail, on behalf of illegal aliens. Don’t you think there’s something horribly wrong with that exchange?
