Minnesota fair-goers reject constitutional ban on same-sex marriage
Tuesday, September 06, 2011 at 11:25 am
The Minnesota House of Representatives conducted its annual poll of legislative issues at the Minnesota State Fair this year, and among the questions was how fair-goers would vote on an amendment to the state constitution limiting marriage to one man and one woman and barring same-sex marriage for future generations. Poll respondents rejected the amendment with 29.8 percent voting “yes” and 66.5 percent voting “no.”
According to the House, the poll “is an informal, unscientific survey of issues discussed in prior legislative sessions.”
Both sides of the debate over the amendment rallied their troops to the fair to vote in the poll. Minnesota for Marriage, which supports a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, and Minnesotans United for All Families, which opposes the amendment, sent email alerts to activists during the fair urging them to take the poll.
The poll had by far the highest turnout ever: 12,549 people took the poll compared to 9,926 last year.
Other controversial issues were on the poll this year as well. A slight majority favored requiring showing a photo identification in order to vote (50.8 to 46.4 percent), a majority objected to allowing the Legislature to call a special session (25.4 to 64.2 percent), and a slight majority approved of gambling expansion to generate new government revenue (51.6 to 40.1 percent).

Well done Minnesota! Keep the H8 out of our state! And vote OUT those perpetuating it!

Also it should be noted that on a real ballot, unanswered ballots are considered a “no”, so it really failed, 70.2% – 29.8%.

I got so dang pissed at the dfl tent not having a word of support anywhere.

It’s too bad it’s an unscientific poll, because besides the marriage equality result, I’d like to believe photo ID is that close. Since I’m guessing DFLers were over represented judging from the marriage result, there are apparently still DFLers who need educating on the issue.

For those against gay marriage because of its so-called destructive effects on the family, I recommend a fall trip to beautiful New England. Haven’t seen any ruined families due to the thousands of married gay couples here!!! Maine lobster is delicious and the fall leaves will be as glorious as ever.

Why would you guess that Eric? A majority of the population supports marriage equality. Including many republicans.

This is great news! I hope results like this stick all the way through the election. Let Minnesota be the first state to reject hate! I’ll be so proud!

No one has yet to explain how my my marriage would affect yours. Unless you are a direct relative, how does who I decide to marry affect or harm your particular marriage? The only way it would is if you wanted the opportunity to marry me instead!

The part that gets me is…they act like this is something new…..that NO OTHER gays have gotten married anywhere. Well…therer are 10′s of 1000′s of gay cpls married already…….no one is protecting anything…it doesn’t need protecting….cause’ you kow what….Gay cpls married this past wkend, they married yesterday – they’ll marry tomorrow and next wkend….and guess what, NO ONE will NOTICE…..cause thier marriages have ZERO affect on anyone elses…..all this Ammendment is..is a DIVIDER…. a HATE and BIGOTRY Incentive to get the GOP lemmings to the polls…..it will do nothing to STOP gay cpls from marrying whether it be elsewhere, or in MN someday. Now the questionis: Does MN wanna be on the WRONG side or RIGHT side of history?

Breaking News!
Congresswoman Bachmann calls for eliminating the Minnesota State Fair citing budget shortfalls and fiscal responsibility as the reason.

Let’s just hope this trend manifests itself when election time rolls around next year. You know the radical religious right will be working overtime until then, telling lies and spreading fear as much as possible. Those of us who care about justice and equality need to do all we can to make sure this wretched anti-equal marriage amendment is soundly defeated. People’s hearts and minds are changed by the truth, not through fear or lies.

The liberal news media is always publishing polls that “prove” the majority of Americans support homosexual marriage. Yet, when put to a free and fair vote, it always loses … 30 states so far, even in liberal California! That tells me the liberal news media is LYING.

I did not go to the Fair, so I posted the survey and gave more than just yes/no/undecided answers.
I hope they had background information to go with the questions, because the questions themselves were poorly worded. One might even say biased.

Why do gays consider a difference of opinion to be hate? I am gay and have many gay friends. I don’t hate any of them. However, I don’t agree with same-sex marriage. Can I not have that opinion without being branded as supporting hate? Gays need to be willing to have discussions about issues without resorting to name calling or belittling anyone who disagrees.

You may not agree with it but don’t deprive them of the choice to marry if they want to…. Live and let live my friend! From a proud social libertarian….
