(VIDEO) Moderate Republicans swiftly condemn booing of soldier at GOP debate
Friday, September 23, 2011 at 2:10 pm
At Thursday night’s Republican presidential debate in Florida, a gay soldier serving in Iraq was booed by the audience because he asked a question about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. None of the candidates on stage came to his defense.
After the debate, many moderate Republicans spoke out against the audience’s behavior including Minnesota Republican Rep. John Kriesel who called those who booed “morons.”
Stephen Hill, a gay soldier serving in Iraq, asked the candidates what they would do with Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell if they took over the White House. As he did, the audience booed, and Santorum responded that he would reinstate DADT.
Santorum overlooked that a soldier serving in Iraq during a time of war had been disrespected by the audience. That drew a sharp rebuke from Republicans who support LGBT members of the Armed Forces.
“Tonight, Rick Santorum disrespected our brave men and women in uniform, and he owes Stephen Hill, the gay soldier who asked him the question about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal, an immediate apology,” said a statement from GOProud, a conservative gay rights group aligned with the tea party. “That brave gay soldier is doing something Rick Santorum has never done – put his life on the line to defend our freedoms and our way of life. It is telling that Rick Santorum is so blinded by his anti-gay bigotry that he couldn’t even bring himself to thank that gay soldier for his service.
Minnesota state Rep. John Kriesel (R-Cottage Grove) condemned the incident.
“Booing a soldier during a time of war?!? A new low. Way to look compassionate Florida Republicans. #morons”
“If someone is brave enough to risk their life and serve their country in a time of war, let them serve. Who cares if they are gay?!?! How many of those people in the audience at the GOP debate that booed the gay soldier serving in Afghanistan are brave enough to serve??”
Only two of the candidates spoke out against it Thursday night.
“It was unfortunate,” Jon Huntsman told Talking Points Memo. “You know, we’re all Americans, and the fact that he is an American who put on the uniform says something good about him.”
Gary Johnson said, “In my opinion, when you have booing this is not indicative of Republicans,” he said. “This is not the Republican Party that I belong to.”

This is what happens when a party allows itself to be taken over by a fringe group. None of the debate participants had the strength of character to defend Mr. Hill on air for fear of the blowback they’d get from some in their own party. Sad.

“Gary Johnson said, “In my opinion, when you have booing this is not indicative of Republicans,” he said. “This is not the Republican Party that I belong to.””
There is only one Republican Party. Applauding the idea of letting people without medical insurance die and now booing a soldier on active duty just because he’s gay. I think it’s time for soul searching because I don’t see how someone in good conscience could join that sort of a party.

So, is it now enough to qualify as a “moderate” Republican merely to object to hurling abuse at a gay active-duty service member? I guess one can vote to destroy Social Security and Medicare and still be considered moderate, so long as one isn’t an obvious bigot.

“Moderate Republicans swiftly condemn booing of soldier at GOP debate”
But at the end of the day they’re still Republicans aren’t they? As already stated there is only one Republican Party and it’s all about hate, bigotry, coddling the wealthy etc. etc.
So why are we putting these few so-called moderate Republicans up on some sort of pedestal? If they had an ounce of morality or decency they wouldn’t be Republicans would they?

I don’t know what Gary Johnson is talking about. The sad and undeniable truth is that the GOP has been overrun by religious maniacs, paranoid and conspiracy-mongering right-wingers, and catamites of corporate power.
I don’t know what Johnson is referring to when prejudice of all kinds is the order of the day for most conservatives. Take my copy and pastes (below). These are commonplace on http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/*/index, a popular conservative web site.
Less frequent, but still not uncommon, are racist insults and stereotypes. Don’t take my word for it, go to the web site and poke around.
More and more the GOP strikes me as a kind of cultural landfill, where all the refuse of history, its failed ideas and vile prejudices, its atavistic and knuckle-dragging impulses, go for fellowship.
“Anyway – this is what I think: The crowd was right to boo that gay soldier.
Gays should not serve. They should be screened out. They should be bood when they expose their perversions to the world.”
“But it pisses me off that anyone thnks a gay soldier who served in the military deserves respect.
Piss on them.”
“The unbridled narcissism of gays is the reason people dislike them.”
“What if he said he’s a PEDOPHILE???? What would be the difference??? He ONLY wants to think about SEX, ANAL SEX!!! They were RIGHT in BOOING! It’s DISGUSTING!”
“Betchca all those nancy boy faggots in the NYT copy room are just peeing all over themselves thinking about gay marines…”
“The Marines were once the proudest and finest fighting force on the planet. Now they will be just another sick part of our society.”
“You can bet the JAG offices will now become overrun with fags.”
“Warning: The homo fagots have their own military now… be careful.”

It comforts me to know that, just like those pea-brained, ignorant redneck bigots quoted above as representative of Republican ideology, self-righteous narrow-minded zealots like Kevin (So why are we putting these few so-called moderate Republicans up on some sort of pedestal? If they had an ounce of morality or decency they wouldn’t be Republicans would they) are not exemplary of the average Democrat.
I am a conservative, hard-working physician, and I have dedicated my life to serving others. I also spent 10 years in the military. I have no apologies to make for not being a democrat.

The military was the last public forum where gay people were unable to come out and tell their own stories and confront stereotypes that are placed upon them. One after another, teachers, cops, firefighters, every day people you work with, and now, finally, our men and women fighting for our country can finally come out and tell their own stories and show to the world that the horrible stereotypes thrust upon them are completely untrue.
As the military was the last bastion of allowed homophobia, it was the reason so many on the right fought so hard to keep it in place. And now that it’s gone, it’s clear that they’re extremely upset. Well, too bad. They got their political football taken away from them, and they’re not getting it back.
Thank you to this brave soldier for telling his story and showing the world that, yes, gay men and lesbians are indeed fighting for our country and to be a face to put aside those fears and see that they are untrue. And shame on all the Republicans at the debate for not standing up for him. They should be ashamed they seek to deny freedom from the people who are fighting and dying for theirs.

To further agree with Eric just read the comments section on yahoo news sometimes. It doesn’t even have to be about Obama. Read an article about the NBA or the Williams Sisters. It’s insane the amount of racist hateful trash conservatives post.

Our country is regressing, thanks to the GOP and the Tea Party. How can we as a nation tolerate this sort of disrespect to our men and women in uniform? Having a Black President sure has brought the haters out of the wood-work, sorry to say.

Not only did the booing of Sterhen Hil turn my stomach, the lack of copmapssion from the GOP panel last night showed that most of them are so blinded by their bigotry of Gays serving in the MiIitary for a country that still treats gays like second-class citizens, their silence was defeaning. The audience reflects just how far to the right the GOP has gone. Big tent party my ass!
That Rick Santorum had the balls to say that as POTUS, he would reinstate the rule. AS would Bachmann. You would expect that from Michel;e Bachmann.
Stephen Hill displayed more courage and strength to stand up for his values and to fight for this county, than all of the people combined on that stage last night .
My prayer for all who serves this country in uniform be they gay or straight, THANK YOU!. May God keep you safe.

This Republican Party is extreme, cruel and dangerous. Their hostilities and disrespect runs deep for a long hit list of Americans.

Mr. Santorum, I read that you said that the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” would give already serving homosexual soldiers “special rights.” Really? The training that I received in the Army as a gay soldier was that I could essentially be gay, but… I could not tell anyone (lie), not act on it under any circumstances (including the privacy of my own home with another consenting adult) and not show a propensity to act on my ‘gayness’ (i.e. he/she is likely to act on their homosexual tendencies in the future. So… if you repeal DADT we are awarded special rights??? Okay, Santorum, I’ll give you this… if you feel comfortable telling the straight soldiers that they cannot tell anyone that they are heterosexual, not participate in any sexual acts with a member of the opposite sex, not marry, and not show any signs that they may act on their feelings for other sex at some time in the future… then, and only then will you have a point. Mr. Santorum, you do not deserve to hold a public office in this country until you educate yourself on civil rights. I don’t care what party you are with, you have an obligation to serve us all… even the ones that you don’t like… JUST LIKE THAT SOLDIER DOES.

How do you BOO a Soldier and then call yourself a Patriot? But yet these same people call Dick Cheney,Rush Limbaugh,Glen Beck….PATRIOTS! This Behavior is as LOW as you can get. These people have to LOOK UP to see a Snakes Belly.

I’d feel a lot safer being protected by Steven Hill than by all eight mealy-mouthed, weak, 2 faced phonies on that stage. Patriots my a**. Thank God our military shows more sense than the general public of this country. They consider each other brothers and sisters, and cover each others backs, despite irrelevant details like sexual orientation, race and religion.

I don’t even know what to say. Is it that the bigots have to congregate somewhere?

eric that gay soldier gave you the freedoms to write what you write
you ought to thank him for that
i am glad that it has passed and is now law
being a homophobic will get you no where so except a person as they are
or just shut up i chose to except and embrace
i am a veteran who served with honorable gay people
i was more afraid of the pedophiles who didn’t call themselves gay but in turn were violent people who preyed on new enlisty,s so ^%$# you eric we now have a better military and a stronger one, because gay people can now do there job openly with out hesitation to protect your dumb &^% from the real threats
Comment posted September 25, 2011 @ 10:04 am
lets get another thing straight there was only one or two people who booed
it was no where near the majority of people
so get over it and let people live because as long as there been military’s there has been gay people serving in them
read your history

Either the same group of morons is hopping from one GOP debate to another or this lack of compassion IS indicative of the Republican party. Any sentient being who has watch the party evolve since the days of Reagan would know its the latter.

Ray,
I think you missed my point. I was condemning the anti-gay comments that others had made, not supporting them!
