Inver Grove Heights rejects domestic partner registry, council member calls gays ‘weird little group’

The Inver Grove Heights City Council rejected an ordinance Monday that would have established a domestic partner registry in the city, with one council member railing against the moral decline of America and referring to the LGBT community as a “weird little group.”

The council voted 4-1 against the measure with only council member Rosemary Piekarski Krech voting in support.

Council Member Dennis Madden, however, was livid that the council even brought the measure up for a vote.

Madden railed against gay and lesbian couples and said efforts to pass the domestic registry were tied to the anti-gay marriage amendment on the ballot in 2012.

“I feel it’s a step in the direction of going along with the referendum, marriages that are other than man and wife marriage, man-woman marriages,” Madden said during the hearing. “I’m getting a little tired of seeing the standards and morals of this country going down the tubes and the political correctness that’s allowed and I think it’s a disgrace to our community, our state and our country.”

Madden said the country should return to the values on which he said it was founded.

“I’m tired of these weird little groups that do all these strange things. I’m fed up with that,” Madden said. “Whatever you do in your private life is your business, but don’t ask me to come along and approve it.”

Phil Duran of Outfront Minnesota spoke about how residents of other cities have already benefited from registries. He gave the example of a Rochester health club that was able to save couples who cannot marry $500 a year if they registered with the city.

The Rev. Obi Ballinger who pastors a church just across the river from Inver Grove Heights spoke in favor of the measure saying he has members of his church who could benefit.

“You have a chance to make it clear that all families are welcomed here,” Ballinger said. “A domestic partner registry can send a clear signal that no matter who you are or where you are in life’s journey, you are welcomed in Inver Grove Heights.

Bill Kostner opposed the ordinance. He told the council he came to “look the five of you in the eye.”

“What are you doing getting involved in a moral issue?” Kostner said. “This issue has nothing to do with the growth of Inver Grove Heights, its fiscal base, the safety of the community for its citizens, the improvement of the roads or water system and how about keeping taxes down?”

He added, “I don’t really understand how and why you would want to get involved in a moral issue that is probably going to get resolved next year with a constitutional amendment.”

Wow – Dennis Madden, tell us what you really think? He seems so vehemently against homosexuals that makes me think he’s hiding something about himself. Passing this ordinance was a no-brainer…it could only help residents of that city.

Hopefully the council members who voted against it are replaced with those who have less bigoted views against the LGBT community.

Scratch a homophobe, find a closet case. It happens every time. Wait and see.

“And what’s with all these floor-escent lights?” he added. “In MY day, we lit our city council meetings using whale oil lamps!”

The hate is heard loud and clear of differing opinions. I only wish our own City Council had been more deliberative about this decision, instead of just going along with the recommendation of our Human Rights Advisory Commission, comprised almost entirely of gays and lesbians.

@Disgusted American Even bigots ought not be wished dead. Wish him enlightened, wish him out of public office, but don’t wish him dead.

Our city has passed a domestic partnership registration ordinance. I only wish this was available when I was single and living with my male roommate 15 years ago. We co-habitated and were dependent on one another financially (for rent and utilities that is). We could have saved ourselves healthclub membership fees, park passes and free hot chocolate at the skating rink. Domestic partnership bliss.

Madden is quite the bigot but most likely it is because he fights with his own attraction to men. Anyone with this much hatred does not belong in any office since he is incapable of reasonable decisions. Time to dump this guy no matter what you feel about partnerships. I can bet he disparages all races and religions that are not his own.

I may be part of a “weird little group” but I pay the same taxes as you do, sir, and I deserve at least a semblance of the same rights.

Inver Grove Heights is backward, backward, backward.

How can the commissioner say ““What are you doing getting involved in a moral issue? … This issue has nothing to do with the growth of Inver Grove Heights, its fiscal base, the safety of the community for its citizens, the improvement of the roads or water system and how about keeping taxes down?”

It has plenty to do w the fiscal base and the improvement of the local economy. GLBT people are already income -earners. Why would a city NOT want to attract professionals? Why would a city want to put up roadblocks for the stability of the families that live there?

And the commissioner IS getting involved in a moral issue. His stance says that it’s ok for a state to sanction discrimination. He’s saying that it’s ok for a state to deny death and medical benefits, civil rights and responsibilities to a minority population in his district, simply because they make him uncomfortable, to him they are “weird.”

I hope the “weird little group” already residing in Inver Grove Heights votes en masse to let this commissioner know just what they think of his public sentiments.

HEre’s one of MANY MANY MANY articles detailing the economic benefit of a community when there is diversity and equality. The quality of life for the entire community goes up.

Frankly, the registries make me nervous. I worry they are more a tool of discrimination than equal rights. They seem like a perfect way to get people to self identify so that they can be more accurately targeted later. If an organization wants to recognize equal rights and offer a discount to all families, they can do that by simply accepting without bias what people answer to “who is in your family?”. This doesn’t require that first people need to be on a list downtown.

I am a tax-paying citizen. I happily pay taxes and other work-related deductions so that the married couples can have special marriage benefits–tax benefits, medical insurance benefits, etc. I only ask the same for me and my partner.

We are not a weird little group. Sadly, I’m very boring. I work hard, pay my bills and I contribute to the economy in so many ways. I should also add that my partner and I have a much more “normal” marriage than the majority of other straight couples out there. We plan on staying together for the rest of our lives, unlike the 50% of straight couples.

I’m confused. what’s up with “less government”. Isn’t this more government telling me what I can and can’t do?

Unfortunatly many from this man’s generation have fixed and unflexible thinking, the sooner this generation dies off the better off the country will be.

“Madden said the country should return to the values on which he said it was founded.”

Values like the one which only allowed white male property owners to vote?

Ron

Right, Mike. Well said. Or maybe values like the part of the Constitution that said Blacks were three-fifths of a person? Those are the “values” to which we should return??? That’s a conservative mindset for you: they’re always building that bridge to the 12th century. Long ago I came to the conclusion that conservatism is a mental disorder. Anyone who would purposely repress growth, enlightenment, and progress for the human race is sick and needs treatment. Get out of the way, conservatives–the train to the future is coming through. If you don’t get on board (or at least move off the track), you’ll be run over and left behind.

The question is, does the city process marriage paperwork? Does the city give out marriage licenses? Seems to me that this is a county responsibility. When I got my marriage license, I went to the county courthouse, not city hall.

Regardless of your personal viewpoint on this issue, it is not a function of city government. The debate over this issue should be before the county board.

I am intentionally not expressing my personal opinion on this issue because I would like to get feedback from others on the factual points I raised.

I’ve never heard of county domestic partner registery, John. Are there such things? Does a County even have the ability to create such a registry, which would affect its cities?

I fully applaud Dennis Madden and the Inver Grove Heights city council for this vote. I have had it with the militant GLBTers trying to force their agenda into every aspect of our lives. Be who you are privately, and quit trying to force me to accommodate you through the force of law. I never knew much about Mr. Madden before, but you can be assured that I will be contributing to his next campaign. Ms. Pekarski-Krech has obviously been there too long already. Time for her to move on!

Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire (A. H. Buss & M. Perry, 1992). Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression. Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

IF I was gay, I would remember the holocaust, and the fact that all of the religions and 90% of the people are against homosexualism. I sure wouldn;t want my name on ANY list, that would make it too easy to round up those who are different. I don’t trust my government…..do you?
