"Republicans have capitalized on cultural issues such as abortion and gay marriage to convince lower- and middle-class residents to vote against their own economic interests..."
Jeeezus Christ!!! If any of the journalists who drool all over Mr. Frank's writing actually read what he writes, they might see how calling working class people "lower class," or trying to frame abortion and gay marriage as "cultural issues," not to mention continuing to harp on people for "voting against their interests" just play into the framework of liberal elite media snobs who have no morals and hate good hard-working Americans.
How about:
"Republicans have capitalized on issues that people feel passionate about such as abortion and marriage to win over working class and middle class residents of rural and middle American communities to vote their values, even at the cost of their own economic benefit."
Stop acting like pro-life and anti-gay people are stupid just because you disagree with them!
"Lower Class"?!? WTF? Is this article written by a member of the royal family?
Way to help mobilize the republican base, dude.
