Like a public school battling back from No Child Left Behind sanctions, Minnesota continues to better its grades on the Sunshine Foundation’s annual evaluation of states’ rules, methods and performance in disclosing data on money in political campaigns. Minnesota earned a C- in data accessibility and an A- in Web accessibility after flunking out in both areas just five years ago.
Evaluators liked the state’s campaign laws and loved our enforcement practices, but dragging down the state’s overall grade of B- was an F for failure to mandate electronic filings. They griped about confusion in Minnesota’s means of tracking corporate donations when outfits like 3M are listed under 10 separate spellings amid a sometimes-confusing online taxonomy.
