AM.MN: Super-absorbent 10th Amendment? T-Paw seeks aid for damp
If states’ rights include opting out of a public option in federal health care reform, they apparently don’t include the right to deal with droughts and deluges on your own. On Tuesday, Gov. Pawlenty sent a letter to the federal government asking for help with six soggy counties up north. If only state government didn’t regularly [...]
What a hoot! Obama returns to downtown Minneapolis digital billboards
President Obama will be shown on two of downtown Minneapolis’ digital billboards while he speaks about health care to a crowd inside Target Center, according to David Brauer of MinnPost. It won’t be the president’s first time to get lit on the electronic signs.
Pawlenty operates on Romney with WaPo op-ed
With his op-ed in the Washington Post this week, Gov. Pawlenty’s purpose was widely seen as delving more than skin deep. Sure, he was attacking national health insurance legislation, but he was also surgically enhancing the size of his health care portfolio in preparation for presidential primping in 2012. And with a simultaneous flick of the scalpel, he [...]
AM.MN: As if Social Security weren’t enough, Gen X to clean up meth mess
Minneapolis and St. Paul tear down vacant houses by the hundreds while suburbs and outlying towns face waves of foreclosures that leave homes empty. Meanwhile in rural Minnesota, a persistent meth craze continues to ravage not only people but real estate. Tiny Eitzen, in the state’s far southeastern corner, will soon lose a house that meth [...]
DNC chair calls on Pawlenty to intervene in U.S. Senate race
Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine sent a letter to Gov. Tim Pawlenty yesterday urging him to call on Norm Coleman to concede the U.S. Senate contest. “I urge you to use your influence to bring this process to an end by asking Norm Coleman to allow his neighbors and yours their full representation in [...]
Billboard targets T-Paw over potential Franken/Coleman role
A new billboard at a busy St. Paul intersection takes aim at Gov. Tim Pawlenty. Paid for by a coalition of liberal advocacy groups and labor unions, the sign seeks to highlight Pawlenty’s potentially key role in the ongoing U.S. Senate contest. If the Minnesota Supreme Court rejects Norm Coleman’s appeal and certifies Al Franken [...]
Demand for meth treatment is down, but anti-meth billboards are still up
Good news: Demand for help to get off meth is down by half in the Twin Cities. And that indicates lower meth use, according to the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Minnesota Public Radio reports. The proportion of meth-related admissions to metro treatment programs — 6 percent — was twice what it was two years ago, [...]
Billboard wars: St. Paul’s never-ending struggle against outdoor signs
St. Paul is the undisputed billboard capitol of Minnesota. There are currently 561 super-sized signs lining the streets of the city, according to Scenic St. Paul, which has worked for years to reduce the number of such structures. Since April, Scenic St. Paul volunteers have been photographing every single one of the billboards. Yesterday, a special screening of these photographs was held during a luncheon gathering at City Hall to bring attention to the issue.
Sign season: Hooray (and Hooters) for Obama
