Appearing in Cannon Falls, Minn., yesterday, President Barack Obama was asked about legalizing medical marijuana. His answer was beyond vague and not entirely supportive.

Bill to allow marijuana legalization introduced in U.S. House

Legislation was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday morning to allow each state to deal with marijuana as it sees fit. Reps. Jared Polis, D-CO, Barney Frank, D-MA, Steve Cohen, D-TN, John Conyers, D-MI, Barbara Lee, D-CA, and Ron Paul, R-TX introduced the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2011 (HR 2306) as a salute to personal freedom, states’ rights and fiscal responsibility.

Global commission: War on drugs has failed

The Global Commission on Drug Policy — a panel featuring former U.S. Secretary of State George Schultz, former U.S. Chairman of the Federal Reserve Paul Volcker, former Secretary General of the U.N. Kofi Annan, among others — released a report with sobering findings: “The global war on drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world.”

Franken, Colorado’s Polis introduce anti-bullying legislation

Sen. Al Franken and Rep. Jared Polis, D-CO, held a press conference Thursday to announce the reintroduction of legislation that would help protect public school students from bullying, harassment and discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Also attending the press conference were Wendy Walsh, whose 13-year-old son, Seth, took his own life after being bullied at school and Ellen Kahn from the Human Rights Campaign.

Conservative philanthropist Scaife comes out against GOP effort to defund Planned Parenthood

Billionaire newspaper publisher and right-wing philanthropist Richard Mellon Scaife came out Sunday strongly in opposition to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann has been among the most vocal proponents of the effort.
