In 2005, the Ward Eight city council race was arguably the most hotly contested in Minneapolis. This year five candidates are vying for the post, including incumbent Elizabeth Glidden. Crime and the foreclosure crisis are likely to be the issues foremost on the minds of voters.

Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan was briefed Wednesday on the ongoing investigation into the now defunct Metro Gang Strike Force. Apparently the news was not good. In a statement released afterwards Dolan acknowledged that seven Minneapolis cops are implicated in the probe.

Minneapolis police officer Jason Andersen did not use excessive force when he shot Fong Lee eight times on July 22, 2006, a  jury ruled this afternoon. No damages will be awarded to Lee’s family, who filed the wrongful death lawsuit in federal court.

Fong Lee was shot eight times by Minneapolis police officer Jason Andersen three years ago. The cops say Lee was armed and dangerous on the night in question. Lee’s family insists that he was an unarmed, innocent victim. Now a jury will decide which narrative rings true.

The FOX hit “Family Guy” is in the crosshairs of a religious right group, while Obama finds himself dressed up in a Nazi uniform. Minnesota’s religious right is pleased that religious right groups support abstinence-only sex education.

All eyes are on the release this afternoon of the Heffelfinger-Luger report on law enforcement during the Republican National Convention that was commissioned by the City of St. Paul, where most of the RNC events, protests and policing took place. But at least three studies from outside of St. Paul are pending as well: an internal report by the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), an outside review by a national police organization by invitation of the MPD, and a winter term research project by a team of students from Ohio’s Oberlin College.

The Al Franken for Senate campaign is asking Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie to instruct all counties to redouble their efforts to find missing ballots. “There are votes in Minnesota that aren’t even being accounted for, much less being counted,” spokesman Andy Barr told reporters at a press conference at Franken headquarters in St. Paul this afternoon.
