RNC in review: A great photo essay by Mike Dvorak
Local photojournalist Mike Dvorak was out on the streets for MnIndy on Monday. Because we were featuring a lot of news photos and galleries that day, we decided to hold this collection of 42 images and showcase it today as part of our RNC week wrap-up.
MnIndy Video: Why gay Republicans endorsed McCain
The Log Cabin Republicans, a national federation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Republicans, met in St. Paul on Tuesday to endorse the ticket of Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin. While acknowledging that McCain isn’t perfect on gay rights issues, the group was adamant in its belief that McCain wishes to, and can, [...]

The Schultz Report: Obama and the Democrats did what they needed to do
Today David Schultz and I talk about the dramatic conclusion Barack Obama’s speech brought to the Democratic convention in Denver. All in all, he says, it capped a week in which all the major Democrats featured at DNC said and did the right things. “The Democrats did well,” says Schultz. “Obama may have recaptured the [...]
MnIndy Video: Journos, protesters sound alarm over pre-RNC police behavior
Reports of media suppression by local law enforcement have activists concerned that their message might not get heard — and that a free press at the Republican National Convention will be trumped as police throw homeland security in front of the cameras.
The Schultz Report: Enough with the unity rhetoric; what will Obama do?
In this edition of the Schultz Report audiocast–and we’ll have another tomorrow, after Barack Obama’s Democratic convention-closing speech in Denver tonight–we examine developments at this week’s DNC. Hamline University political science prof and Minnesota politics analyst David Schultz gives the Democrats mixed grades for their handling of the party’s quadrennial infomercial. “The convention in some [...]
MnIndy Video: St. Paul homeless say city wants to hide them during RNC
Yesterday Steve Perry and I ventured over to St. Paul to talk with staff and clients at the Dorothy Day Center, the homeless shelter, drop-in center and emergency foodshelf that sits across the street a few hundred feet from the arena where the GOP’s big swinging trunks will gather next Monday.
We learned that while the center will remain open during the Republican National Convention, it won’t exactly be business as usual. Details, and reactions from some of the people who hang their hats there, in this MnIndy video report.
‘To project and present’: One artist’s RNC project is — literally — a vehicle for political commentary
As a part of the UnConvention, a sideshow to the Republican National Convention, next week Miami artist Steven Gagnon will drive his sculptural contraption to the Twin Cities and park it in a public spot near Intermedia Arts, a sponsor of the festivities. Gagnon’s “border cruiser” calls attention to the experience of undocumented people in the U.S.
The Schultz Report: McCain can’t evade the age issue much longer — can he?
This week, as the political news cycle takes a back seat to the Olympics and most federal campaigns take advantage of the chance to lie low and catch a breath, politics analyst David Schultz and I turn to a couple of emergent themes in the McCain campaign — the growing signs that McCain’s managers are [...]
Video: Obama’s ‘Embrace’ turns celebrity charge back on McCain
Widely assailed for being dismissive of the McCain "Celebs" ad that’s been running on TV in 11 states and a breakaway web hit, the Obama campaign has released a new ad this morning called "Embrace." The :30 spot tries to turn the tables on McCain by pointing out that McCain has courted political celebrity for [...]
