Rep. Michele Bachmann will be headlining September’s Taking America Back conference, an event that includes notable “birthers” Jerome Corsi, Aaron Klein, Joseph Farah and Alan Keyes. In fact, of the 15 speakers, at least 9 have expressed doubt that President Obama was born in the United States and is therefore an illegitimate president.

The event, to be held in Miami Sept. 16–18, offers attendees a choice between “the world of standards and morality, self-government and accountability to God or the world of tyranny and ever-changing moral codes enforced by government.” But while the conference website doesn’t include a schedule of topics yet, the lineup of speakers suggests it could focus on whether Obama is legitimately the president.

The 15 speakers include a Who’s Who of the “birther” movement, and many have ties to the conservative website WorldNetDaily, which is the event’s sponsor. That site’s managing editor and a conference speaker, David Kupelian, penned the piece, “Why I care about Obama eligibility issue.”

Kupelian’s boss, WND founder Farah, is also outspoken in his belief that Obama was not born in the United States. Farah has been instrumental in plugging Corsi’s book, Obama Nation, which questions the legality of an Obama presidency.

Other Farah employees who are speaking: Floyd Brown, who says there’s no proof Obama was born in the the country, and Aaron Klein, who has written a book doubting Obama’s legitimacy.

Also invited to address the confab is Gary DeMar, president of American Vision, a small religious right outfit who has doubts about Obama’s legitimacy.

“Whether Barack Obama was born in the United States is important, but even more important is for him to demonstrate his constitutional loyalty to a nation built on Christian principles,” DeMar wrote in 2009.

Keyes, the perennial Senate and presidential candidate, refuses to refer to Obama as “president” and has filed suit to gain access to Obama’s birth certificate.

Also speaking alongside Bachmann is former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, who shares similar views with birthers, having once said, “Send Obama back to Kenya.”

Saturday Night Live alum and tea party activist Victoria Jackson told a rally in April, “Whether he has the birth certificate or not, he’s not an American.”

Only one speaker — Ann Coulter — has the distinction of taking a firm public stance against “birtherism.” She called the movement’s proponents “cranks,” yet she’ll be sharing the stage in Florida with a line-up that includes a majority of so-called “cranks.”

As will Bachmann, who Farah described Sunday as “one of the leaders in calling for a repeal of Obamacare.”

“She’s a rock star, a principled, liberty-loving woman of conviction.,” he wrote. “It will be a treat to see her and hear her and interact with her in Miami.”

Details for three debates between presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama were released by the campaigns today. Each will begin at 8 p.m. (CST) and last 90 minutes. The first debate will take place on September 26 at the University of Mississippi and will be hosted by Jim Lehrer. Then on October 7 at Belmont University the candidates will square off in a town-hall style debate moderated by Tom Brokaw. Their final face-to-face encounter will take place on October 15 at Hofstra University with Bob Schieffer running the show.

James Fallows has an interesting piece in this month’s Atlantic analyzing the primary-season debates. The poor sap sat through all 47 candidate encounters to search for clues as to what we might see when Obama and McCain face off. His commentary on the various moderators is biting and spot on. (“Wolf Blitzer was the most intrusive and self-aggrandizing.”) Fallows also notes that Obama was much more freewheeling, funny and effective in his 2004 senate debates with Alan Keyes. Based on this assessment, he comes up with some hilarious advice for the Democrat. “For Obama the key is: look at John McCain, and see Alan Keyes.”

The Values Voter Debate Monday night was bypassed by the four leading Republican contenders for president. But the other seven who showed were staunch in their opposition to Planned Parenthood and abortion and strongly in favor of abstinence-based education.

“I want to be the president to appoint the justice that is the final vote we need to overturn Roe v. Wade and end this night of wrong,” said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., expressing a deep antipathy toward abortion that was shared by everyone on stage and many in the crowd.

“Life begins at conception,” echoed Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas. Paul called on other candidates to support his “Sanctity of Life Act,” that which would strip federal courts of the right to review lawsuits related to reproductive health.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., pledged to appoint only anti-abortion justices to the Supreme Court. “If a judicial candidate can look at a sonogram of an unborn child and not see evidence of a valuable human life, I will not appoint him to the bench,” he said.

Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., agreed with Hunter, saying, “All of us would appoint judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade.” He said when it came to appointing judges and justices, “There will be a litmus test.”

Businessman John Cox said that, “This issue tears this country apart, and it shouldn’t.” He said he was staunchly against abortion and called for judges to “only interpret the law.”

Ambassador Alan Keyes, who ran unsuccessfully for Senate against Barack Obama in 2004, said he would “issue an executive order…to protect life in the womb.” And he called on Republicans to support a right-to-life amendment to the Constitution, saying, “It’s simple, it’s clear, it must be done.”

Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas took a shot at the candidate who did not attend, saying, “It’s obvious that all of us on this stage are pro-life. I also think it’s obvious why there are four empty podiums here tonight.”

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson all declined to attend the debate.

Candidates expressed general opposition to family planning programs. In a “lighning “lightning round” of questions, all candidates said they would defund Planned Parenthood and would allow federal funding to go only to organizations that “neither perform nor promote abortion.” All candidates also expressed opposition to universal health care and supported a ban on federal funding of school programs that teach that homosexuality is normal.

Candidates also were unanimous in their support of expanding abstinence-based education funding, and all expressed opposition to treaties, such as the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, that “could be used to support abortion as a human right.”
