Still from Pawlenty's video, dubbed 'Nighttime in America' by Iowa Democrats

The same morning President Obama announced he’s running for re-election, Tim Pawlenty countered with a video rebuttal. Like his previous Hollywood-style offerings, this one combines a cinematic soundtrack with quick-cut editing. It’s a compilation of doom-and-gloom footage — complete with a shot of lightning ominously striking the White House — about unemployment, foreclosures and high gas prices that concludes with Pawlenty’s response to Obama’s “win the future” rhetoric: “How can America win the future when we’re losing the present?”

Obama unlikely to close Guatanamo this term

By Sofia Resnick | 03.11.11 | 4:40 am

This week President Obama ordered the resumption of military trials for Guantanamo Bay detainees and the continued detention of prisoners who don’t have enough evidence against them to be charged or convicted, effectively breaking his campaign promise to close the facility after his first year in office. It’s a promise that several policy analysts and media outlets believe the president might never fulfill, at least not before 2013, when his first term expires.

ANKENY, Iowa — Appearing at a book signing at a Christian bookstore Sunday, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty criticized President Obama for not significantly addressing spending cuts during his State of the Union address last week. “He stepped to the plate, he swung the bat and he whiffed badly,” Pawlenty said.

Bachmann: Obama has made America less safe

By Andy Birkey | 01.03.11 | 8:43 am

In a recent speech in Troy, Mich., Rep. Michele Bachmann made the claim that President Obama has made the country less safe and that he doesn’t believe America is an “exceptional nation.” Her address has led to some speculation that Bachmann might jump into the 2012 presidential race.

Rep. James Oberstar, chair of the powerful House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, had big plans for transportation in the nation, and in Minnesota in particular: a proposed high-speed rail line from St. Paul to Chicago and a high speed rail line from Minneapolis to Duluth, to name but two. But how well will these projects fare after the 18-term congressman’s defeat last week and a shifting of leadership in Congress?

Using inaccurate figure, Bachmann calls Obama’s India trip ‘massive overspending’

CNN’s Anderson Cooper had a straightforward question for Rep. Michele Bachmann last night: Now that Republicans have the majority in the U.S. House, what spending cuts will they make to balance the budget? Republicans have talked about dismantling the Department of Energy, the Department of Education and doing away with corporate income tax. While Bachmann refused to name any specific programs she’d cut, she did have one case of “massive overspending”: President Obama’s upcoming trip to India. One problem with that: The cost of the trip she repeatedly cites is massively overestimated.
