With the end of 2010 approaching, the St. Petersburg Times’ PolitiFact is holding a contest letting readers chose the “Lie of the Year.” In the running — for her recent incorrect claim that President Obama’s trip to India would cost $200 million per day — is Minnesota’s Michele Bachmann.

Bachmann, McCollum oppose Obama tax plan

Despite coming from opposite ends of the political spectrum, Reps. Michele Bachmann and Betty McCollum have found something to agree on: that President Obama’s compromise with Republicans over tax cuts is a bad idea. McCollum said that the plan does little to help middle-class families, while Bachmann complains that an extension of jobless benefits will add to the deficit. Rep. Keith Ellison, as part of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, also weighed in on the measure.

Walz hits Demmer on per diem payments

Rep. Tim Walz criticized his Republican opponent, Randy Demmer, on Monday for accepting per diem payments in the state legislature at times when he was not on the clock. Walz raised the issue at a KSTP/KAAL-sponsored debate on Sunday challenging Demmer’s fiscal responsibility statements. Demmer responded that his taking of the per diems was “immaterial.”
