Minnesota for Marriage taps NOM’s Christopher Plante in amendment push at fair

The National Organization for Marriage, a Washington, D.C.–based group that opposes rights for same-sex couples, has solicited the help of Christopher Plante in its Minnesota operations in the run-up to a 2012 vote that would ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota’s constitution. Plante is the executive director of the National Organization for Marriage Rhode Island. Plante opposes marriage rights for same-sex couples including civil unions and even the right for same-sex couples to make funeral arrangements together. Update: Plante says he will not be joining NOM’s MN operations.

A new cultural phenomenon, the ‘glitterbomb’ hits anti-gay activists at state fair

The “glitterbombs” that have targeted Michele and Marcus Bachmann, Newt Gingrich and Tim Pawlenty were taken to the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday when Minnesota For Marriage, a group that opposes rights for same-sex couples, was showered with glitter from the fair’s Skyride. The glitterbomb phenomenon, homegrown in Minnesota, has also secured a place in pop culture. Fox’s hit show Glee is explicitly using the glitterbomb in its fall season promotional ads and the New York Times examined the phenomenon last week.

Sharon Sund campaigns to break GOP stranglehold in 3rd Congressional District

Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District, which encompasses the wealthy suburbs west of Minneapolis, should be competitive. Political strategists have often rated the district a tossup, but Republican Rep. Erik Paulsen has managed to keep the district in Republican hands following the 2008 retirement of moderate Rep. Jim Ramstad, even winning by double digits in 2010. As district resident Sharon Sund aims to change that, Paulsen is getting renewed attention from national Democrats, who are launching a new round of ads against him.

Independence Party to campaign against anti–gay marriage amendment

The Independence Party of Minnesota, one of three political parties in Minnesota with major party status, announced on Tuesday that it is joining the campaign to defeat a ballot measure that would place a ban on marriage for same-sex couples in the Minnesota Constitution if passed by the voters in 2012.

MAPE votes to oppose anti–gay marriage amendment

The Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE) voted on Friday to oppose a ballot measure that, if approved by the voters 2012, would place a ban on same-sex marriage in the Minnesota Constitution. MAPE’s board of directors voted unanimously on the issue.

Pawlenty will not challenge Klobuchar in 2012

Former governor and presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty will not challenge Sen. Amy Klobuchar in 2012, the Associated Press reports. Republican Party of Minnesota chair Tony Sutton had suggested that Pawlenty take on Klobuchar following his exit from the presidential race on Sunday.
