Collin Peterson has a pretty good excuse for not yet filing his first-quarter fund-raising figures with the Federal Elections Commission. The 10-term legislator’s campaign treasurer is his son, Elliot Peterson, who lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. On Friday Elliot’s home was destroyed by a tornado that killed three people.

“It was still standing but the windows and doors were blown out and most of their possessions were covered in glass,” reports Allison Myrhe, Peterson’s press secretary. “It’s just a big mess. It’s not inhabitable.”

Understandably FEC reporting requirements slipped a few notches on the priority list. Peterson’s office has been in touch with the FEC to explain the unusual situation, but there’s still time to meet tonight’s midnight deadline.

“We will get something in tonight, but I’m not sure if it will be complete,” says Myrhe. “It will likely have to be amended.”
