Cheney: ‘I was aware of’ waterboarding and ‘I supported it’
On ABC News Monday, Vice President Dick Cheney acknowledged knowing about and approving of the torture technique known as waterboarding.
“I was aware of the program, certainly, and involved in helping get the process cleared, as the agency in effect came in and wanted to know what they could and couldn’t do,” Cheney said. “And they [...]
BBC/Arab media: Iraqi shoe-thrower is being tortured
While we’ve had fun looking at the social-media mashups spun off of the Bush/shoe-throwing incident, here’s a sobering issue: The BBC reports that the man, Muntadar al-Zaidi (pictured in a BBC photo), has been beaten while in Iraqi custody. His brother told the British news agency that al-Zaidi allegedly “suffered a broken arm, broken ribs [...]
Apparently, the shoe fits: Iraqi sole-chucker fuels global meme
The annals of politicized shoe gestures, far as I can tell, are less than voluminous. Coming quickly to mind: Nikita Khrushchev’s “We will bury you,” emphasized by a hammered sole. So-called “shoe-bomber,” Richard Reid, busted while allegedly trying to ignite a fuse in his sneakers. Super spy Austin Powers, stung by a precision-pitched loafer, who [...]
America’s great turkeys
While Sarah Palin’s turkey-pardon interview in front of a bird butcher is a definite contender, my hands-down favorite piece of political Thanksgiving news was George W. Bush’s dramatic 2003 fly-in to Baghdad, where — the Washington Post later revealed — he hoisted a plastic turkey up for the cameras and assembled troops to see. (It [...]
Obama’s army of small donors?
A major theme of the presidential campaign was the stunning ability of Barack Obama to tap into an unprecedented universe of donors, many of them outside the realm of fat-cat contributors who typically fill campaign coffers on both sides of the aisle. But according to a new study by the Campaign Finance Institute, donors giving [...]
Video: Obama, up in ND polls, airs new ad
With Barack Obama’s polling improving in traditionally red North Dakota, the Democrat’s campaign is debuting a new TV spot there. The commercial, which will also air this weekend in Georgia and John McCain’s home state of Arizona, links McCain to George W. Bush, who’s approval is now a historic low 22 percent. “Wonder where John [...]
SNL Thursday: Bush endorses McCain/Palin
Will Farrell returned for a cameo as George W. Bush on last night’s Thurday edition of SNL weekend update. The video, for sizing reasons, is below the jump.
This year’s GOP platform rejects ‘government bailouts of private institutions’
A few weeks ago the Republican Party adopted the latest iteration of its party platform during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. The platform embodies the ideals and vision of the party on issues of importance, like rebuilding home ownership:
We do not support government bailouts of private institutions. Government interference in the markets exacerbates [...]
The legacy continues: ‘Proud Bush-McCain Republicans’ interviewed at RNC
It’s not clear that this video by Blip.tv user “George McCain” is for or against John McCain. At the Republican National Convention this week, campaigners passed out stickers that read “Proud Bush-McCain Republican” to delegates — including an apparently flummoxed Sen. Norm Coleman — on why they’re proud to wear it.
Update: The video is a production of Lobbyists for McCain.
What we mean when we say ‘country first’
The ideals of “country first,” and “service” won lavish praise at the Republican National Convention last night. The realities of the Republican party and President George W. Bush got rather less respect.
A parade of speakers in St. Paul, including Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann, a Hispanic businessman, an Arizona educator, and President Bush (speaking from the [...]
