A day after news that a 132-year-old bridge from Koochiching County will be saved from destruction by moving 200 miles to Washington County comes word that Hennepin County is set to blow up the Lowry Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis. Execution Day for the steel-truss bridge, which opened in 1905 and was rebuilt in 1958 (Minnesota’s centennial), is June 21 — the longest day of the year, when the annual “Solstice River” dance performance takes place at the Stone Arch Bridge just downstream.

Elsewhere around Minnesota this morning …

MEADOWLANDS: First of the last days for Schneiderman’s Furniture. A going-out-of-business sale begins today where the family-owned chain of seven furniture stores across the state started in 1948 — as a grocery and hardware store. [Duluth News-Tribune]

LILYDALE: Town clerk charged with theft, rehired. She faces two felony counts for giving herself an early raise but is back on the job as a temp in a tiny town so strapped for cash it puts parkland for sale. [St. Paul Pioneer Press; Minnesota Independent]

ALEXANDRIA: Ethanol for cheap, briefly. Pipeline Travel Plaza will cut the price for E85 gas by 85 cents from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. tomorrow in the first such promotion of the season, sponsored by corn growers, environmentalists and lung-health advocates. [Alexandria Echo Press]

BEMIDJI: Proposed homeless shelter clears planning board. Capacity will jump from six beds at the current site (where 500 to 1,000 people are turned away annually) to 28 at the new $1.2 million facility. [Bemidji Pioneer]

WILLMAR: Feds pour $800,000 into downtown homes. Thirteen older owner-occupied houses in Willmar and seven in Pennock will get fixed up with government grants. [West Central Tribune]

RUSHFORD: Lefse deficit resolved. Locals who have been hankering for the doughy Scandinavian treat are back in luck, as Norsland Lefse bakery is back in business in a new, larger location. [Rochester Post-Bulletin]
