Minneapolis Public Schools will receive an infusion of $34 million from the recently passed economic stimulus package, according to a breakdown released by the House Committee on Education and Labor. That’s the largest pile of education money headed to the state, but the St. Paul school district is a close second with almost $31 million expected for its coffers. The state’s largest school district, Anoka-Hennepin School District , is slated to receive just more than $12 million.

The federal money is split between two programs aimed at improving education achievement for disadvantaged students. Title 1, Part A funds are directed at schools serving poor kids, while IDEA grants are directed at programs for students with disabilities.

The proposed disbursements for local school…

The stimulus package passed by the House yesterday would pump $150 billion into school districts, colleges and child care centers. This would more than double the Department of Education’s current budget.

The proposed disbursements for local school districts are spread out over three categories: Title 1-A funding, intended to provide support for low-income and disadvantaged students, will be increased by $11 billion over the next two years; funding for the Individuals with Educational Disabilities Act will be bolstered by $13 billion, and construction programs will receive a $14 billion boost.

What would this mean for local school districts in Minnesota? An analysis put together by the House’s Committee on Education and Labor provides estimates of the projected infusion of dollars for all school districts across the country. The Minneapolis Public Schools system is expected to receive the largest bump in funding at nearly $65 million, followed by St. Paul Public Schools with just over $55 million. Anoka-Hennepin, the state’s largest school district, is slated to receive roughly $17 million.

At the low end of the funding spectrum? The Franconia School District, which includes just one school, can expect to pocket just $8,100. Which would buy them a smoking “65 plasma TV (with change to spare).
