With only a few weeks to go before several 2012 candidates face off in the Ames Straw Poll, the world is about to see who has best balanced the game of Iowa momentum and expectations.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has raised almost a quarter of his campaign funds from Minnesotans. His $4.45 million in contributions puts him well below Mitt Romney, whose total haul for this election cycle is $18.3 million.

In poll after poll, presidential hopeful Tim Pawlenty has dawdled in the single digits among Republicans. His poor performance has led to a flood of bad press for the Pawlenty campaign, including an article descriptively titled “When a campaign starts to smell like death” at Salon last week. While there’s no doubt Pawlenty would rather be in the lead, all may not be lost for his presidential ambitions, according to experts watching the campaign.
Yet another Iowa poll of likely caucus-goers has shown Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann with a small lead over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Former Minnesota governor and Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty, who has taken some heat in the past for his seeming unwillingness to criticize his Republican rivals, changed tack this week, openly attacking former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

Rep. Michele Bachmann led the pack for the first time in a Zogby poll of Republican primary voters released on Tuesday. Her presidential campaign appeared to get a jolt from last Monday’s successful GOP debate, and the new poll reflects a surge for the congresswoman whose official campaign is a week old.

Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty have signed on to the Susan B. Anthony List’s 2012 Pro-life Presidential Leadership Pledge. The presidential candidates have pledged to roll back abortion rights in four key areas, and the duo join three other presidential contenders: Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum. Bachmann went after fellow presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday for not signing the pledge and not committing to “ending the practice of abortion.”
The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart appeared as a guest on Fox’s The O’Reilly Factor last night and ran down his take on GOP presidential candidates. While Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann got mention, more as a punchline — “If Sarah Palin doesn’t run, Michele Bachmann could definitely put on that blazer” — Tim Pawlenty got props for seeming “like a reasonable guy.” But, Stewart added, Pawlenty has left Minnesota in worse shape than did, say, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

In the lead-up to Iowa’s first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses, our sister site in Iowa enlists local journalists, academics, political consultants and pundits to help take the pulse, albeit unscientifically, about how various candidates are perceived in the Hawkeye State. In its first edition of the 2012 cycle, the Iowa Independent’s Power Rankings puts Mike Huckabee in first place if the caucus was held today, but Minnesotans Tim Pawlenty and Michele Bachmann also place in the top five.
