“Politics is not an exact science,” said the German and Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarck on more than one occasion (sometimes adding, “It is the art of the possible”). But another masterful politician whose name ends with the letter K might beg to differ — with the “not exact” part, anyway.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, who announced his candidacy for re-election yesterday, told me this about his relationship with the Obama administration last week (and these were his exact words): “This is working out exactly as I would want it.” Something similar he said yesterday about his job satisfaction ended up in a Southwest Journal headline: “I live exactly where I want to be, and I don’t want to go anywhere. … I am exactly where I need to be right now.”

A Lexis search reveals that, more than Mr. Minneapolis or Mr. Mayor, Rybak is actually Mr. Exact. See Rybak’s litany of exactitude after the jump.

[T]he best guy for the job may well be R.T. Rybak, the forward-thinking mayor of Minneapolis. He’s made sensible and sustainable transportation policy a hallmark of his tenure. … His is exactly the kind of proactive, big-picture thinking we need if we are to address our nation’s infrastructure problems and begin moving us toward smarter growth.

Wired credits Rybak with planning for streetcars, “robust” pedestrian policy, doubling the number of cyclists and even downtown’s residential turnaround — everything short of throwing himself bodily into a mass of consitutents to receive their adjulation and arms-aloft support. Wait — Wired’s endorsement gives Rybak props for his now-legendary crowd-surfing antics at the First Avenue nightclub.

The New York Times has posted a PDF copy of the job application questions facing anyone in line for top posts in the Barack Obama administration. Stretching on for a staggering seven pages, it features 63 questions sorted into eight categories: professional background; publications, writings and speeches; relationships and affiliations; financial information; tax information; legal and administrative proceedings; domestic help; and miscellaneous.

You get the impression they’re erring on the side of caution. Sample question: “Do you know anyone or any organization, either in the private sector or government service, that might take steps, overtly or covertly, to criticize your nomination, including any news organization? If so, please identify and explain the potential basis for criticism.”
