An altercation pitting convention police and the Minnesota National Guard against the anarchist group Black Bloc has ended in a fusillade of tear gas and an unknown number of arrests. VIDEO INSIDE.

Slideshow: Iraq Vets Against the War march kicks off RNC Day One

This morning at 8:30, a group of about 150 US military veterans against the war marched from the State Capitol to the security perimeter outside the Xcel Energy Center. During the 20-minute walk, the group shouted out a marching song with improvised lyrics to an audience consisting mainly of reporters and photographers. According to Garret Reppenhagen of Iraq Veterans Against the War, the organization that sponsored the march, “We really want to pressure John McCain’s campaign to bring veterans’ issues to the forefront. We’re very shocked that despite being a veteran himself, he’s voted very badly on issues affecting his fellow veterans.

These shots were taken on the Capitol grounds and in downtown St. Paul between noon and 1 pm today, as protesters and a very visible police contingent prepared for the 1 pm march to Xcel Energy Center organized by the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War.

Official estimates of the crowd size were around 5,000, though several veterans of past marches and rallies estimated the crowd at 6,000-10,000.
