AM.MN: Don’t be anti ‘non-pro-freedom’!

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann doesn’t say President Obama is “anti-American” anymore. Rather, he’s “non-pro-freedom,” she informed a national radio audience Wednesday. If that sounds goofy to the untrained ear, remember that Bachmann’s background is in law, where they bat around phrases like “non pro tunc” (or is that nunc pro tunc?) all the time.

Ward Eight: Glidden faces four rivals in south Minneapolis

In 2005, the Ward Eight city council race was arguably the most hotly contested in Minneapolis. This year five candidates are vying for the post, including incumbent Elizabeth Glidden. Crime and the foreclosure crisis are likely to be the issues foremost on the minds of voters.

MPD on Fong Lee shooting: ‘No officer ever planted evidence in this case’

Damning details relating to the 2006 shooting of Fong Lee by a Minneapolis police officer came to light last week. The capstone was David Hanners’ terrific Sunday piece profiling Lee, officer Jason Anderson and the handgun at the center of the controversy. The upshot from the coverage: evidence suggesting Lee was unarmed and that the [...]

You’ve heard of ‘No Drama Obama’ — now meet ‘Mr. Exact Rybak’

“Politics is not an exact science,” said the German and Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarck. Another politician whose name ends with the letter K might beg to differ: Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak says, about his relationship with the Obama administration: “This is working out exactly as I would want it.” That’s similar to what he told the Southwest Journal: “I live exactly where I want to be … I am exactly where I need to be right now.” Turns out that Rybak, more than being Mr. Minneapolis or Mr. Mayor, is actually Mr. Exact. See his litany of exactitude after the jump.

City Council DOESN’T call for investigation of Minneapolis police over RNC

A minority of the Minneapolis City Council decided Wednesday against requesting answers from Chief Tim Dolan on police actions during the Republican National Convention. And by killing a proposed staff directive, four members of the council’s Public Safety and Regulatory Services Committee made sure that the council majority not on the committee won’t have a say on the issue. MnIndy has audio highlights with transcription after the jump.

Minneapolis Police Chief on Rage concert: ‘basically uneventful’

Latest MPD legal scuffle pits Chief Tim Dolan against the police union

Last Wednesday, The Star Tribune reported that an attorney has asked the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office to investigate Minneapolis Police Chief Timothy Dolan for a data practices violation. What the story failed to make clear, however, is that the police union is behind the rare move, and that the possible charge is a criminal one, [...]
